That’s the Thing About Sweeping Things Under the Rug . . .

The first time he ate an Upyr was satisfying. It had been in the middle of the day and the woman had been alone -- probably a castaway like himself. But there was something about beating creatures like that at their own game that Rayyad had taken a pleasure in. Some would call it a S I C K pleasure. He? No. He just called it a pleasure.
But he’d never known much about them; Upyr. Only that they ate people -- so he ate them back. Only that they could walk in the daylight, so they were more dangerous than Vampires. And, when he became a Vampire himself; only that their sense of self-superiority was like a pungent odor of lingering decay that made him... not want to eat them anymore.
So Rayyad understood why the Vampires of the rotting little filth-hole of Sanctuary avoided the Upyr side of town. But he wasn’t going to let an opportunity pass him by when it was practically served up to him on a rock slab.
Stupid name. But the man it belonged to belonged to all sorts of whispers when one knew where to listen. Advisor to the Bone Queen? Former Heir to the Throne? Rumours Rayyad liked to hear. Even better ones: that Darius the Upyr liked to play civilian by working at the construction sites at n i g h t.
“Do you think they’ll like you more if you reek of inbreeding and sweat?” Rayyad called out from his position leaning against a cart filled with stones.
He had been watching Darius labour for some time -- with only a mild interest, he would lie. There was nothing interesting to watch about a man moving stones. “Really, I’m curious.”
