Tales of Florida Gothic - Chapter 6
Late one night, you look out the window and it looks like it's snowing. In Florida?!?! You look closer and realize it's just a swarm of mosquitos.
After a particularly foggy night, you awaken to find strange 'sculptures' built from sticks scattered about your yard. As the sunlight falls upon them, they seem to lose their structural integrity and collapse into heaps. You no longer go outside on foggy nights.
As your commercial airliner banks above the gulf just outside of Tampa Bay en route to New Orleans, you are able to look almost straight down onto a massive oil tanker. The silhouette of the sea monster beneath it is even larger, though.
While playing Frisbee with your new girlfriend in her back yard, you accidentally toss the disc into the woods. You jog over to the edge of the woods, and see the purple Frisbee just a short way inside, so you push past the brush and enter the edge of the wood. Three days later, exhausted, dehydrated and covered with cuts and bruises, you finally stumble out of the accursed wood. As you lie nearly unconscious on the soft grass of your girlfriend's back yard, you hear her say derisively from her back porch, "You were in there all that time, and didn't even find the Frisbee?" You feel something grab your leg, and you look to see a thick vine has caught you. You scream as it drags you back inside.
After an especially dry Florida winter, the spring rain falls in torrents and a fairy ring appears in your back yard. You and your daughter go outside to examine it. As your daughter skips about inside the ring, you feel light headed and dizzy as you approach it... You awaken some time later in your bed, not recalling how you got there. As you walk around your house, you see strange photos on your walls of a little girl, some of the photos show you with the little girl, smiling and laughing. You have no idea who she is.
It happens every hurricane. As the wind and rain howl just outside your storm shutters, you can catch glimpses of the huge winged creatures dropping from the roaring sky and ripping open houses in your neighborhood with their massive claws. Dragging out the screaming people from inside, the monstrosities leap back into the air with their helpless, flailing prey. You hide in the deepest part of your house, as great claws rend and tear mercilessly at the masonry while the storm rages...
