Skinamarink (2022) Skinamarink is an independent horror film written, directed, edited, and crowdfunded by Kyle Edward Ball. It premiered at Fantasia Film Festival in July 2022, was released in theaters in North America on January 13, 2023, and was also released on the streaming platform Shudder on February 2.

Kaylee and Kevin are two children who live with their father. One night, their father makes a phone call, and states that Kevin recovered well from a fall down the stairs. By the time what should be morning rolls around, it seems to still be night time. Kaylee and Kevin can't really tell because all windows and doors in the house have vanished, along with their father. They camp out in front of the TV with their toys and wait for him to return, but it seems that they're not alone…

I said it during the Lonely tourney, and I'll say it again: This movie is the childhood fear of being alone in your room at night on steroids, not only because you are alone but mainly because you are afraid of the dark. It's the fear that there's a monster with you in the room, under the bed, in the closet, in the corner, watching you from the darkness. And we never get to know what it is or anything about it, just that it is there and that it wants to hurt these children.

Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead (Doctor Who) (2008) The Doctor and Donna visit the biggest library in the universe and find it completely empty. They soon discover why. The shadows are alive with microscopic predators, the darkness is encroaching, and there's no way out.

DOCTOR: The piranhas of the air. The Vashta Nerada. Literally, the shadows that melt the flesh. Most planets have them, but usually in small clusters. I've never seen an infestation on this scale, or this aggressive. DONNA: What do you mean, most planets? Not Earth? DOCTOR: Mmm. Earth, and a billion other worlds. Where there's meat, there's Vashta Nerada. You can see them sometimes, if you look. The dust in sunbeams. DONNA: If they were on Earth, we'd know. DOCTOR: Nah. Normally they live on road kill. But sometimes people go missing. Not everyone comes back out of the dark. RIVER: Every shadow? DOCTOR: No. But any shadow. RIVER: So what do we do? DOCTOR: Daleks, aim for the eyestalk. Sontarans, back of the neck. Vashta Nerada? Run. Just run.

The Haunter of the Dark (H.P. Lovecraft) ""The Haunter of the Dark" by H. P. Lovecraft

The main character, Blake, inadvertently summons an eldritch being into his local church. The being can only go abroad in darkness, and is hence constrained to the tower at night by the presence of the lights of the city. However, when the city's electrical power is weakened during a thunderstorm, the local people are terrified by the sounds coming from the church and call on their Catholic priests to lead prayers against the demon. Blake, aware of what he has let loose, also prays for the power to remain on. However, an outage occurs and the being flies towards Blake's quarters. He is subsequently found dead, staring out of his window at the church with a look of horror on his face."

Project Hail Mary (Andy Weir) "the book is about alien microbes extinguishing the sun by siphoning off its light energy to fuel their own metabolism. the book follows the amnesiac protagonist, sent far off into the depths of space to the origin of said microbes to save the world before everything gets too dark and too cold. basically, the sun is dying."

Marble Hornets (2009-2014) Marble Hornets is an American found footage horror web series created by Troy Wagner, Joseph DeLage, and Tim Sutton. It is a pseudo-documentary based on the Slender Man online mythos. The first video posted to YouTube was on June 20, 2009, 10 days after Eric Knudsen made the original images of Slender Man on the Something Awful forums. It follows film student Jay Merrick (Wagner) as he investigates what happened to the student film Marble Hornets, abandoned by its director Alex Kralie (DeLage) after encountering the Slender Man (called "the Operator").

There are 92 episodes on the Marble Hornets channel, with accompanying videos from a diegetic side-channel, totheark. As of late 2025, it had over 700,000 subscribers and received 125 million views. It also established the Slender Man symbol, which has since appeared in many other stories featuring the character. It would go on to inspire multiple web series in the same style as Marble Hornets, with these types of web series given the nickname "The Slenderverse".

Technically speaking, very little happens in Marble Hornets. "Nothing happening" will keep you awake for weeks. It says something about the series that one of the scariest clips shown is a bald man in a business suit walking into a dark bedroom… Bald all over.

Boogie Frights (The Powerpuff Girls) (1998) The Boogie Man uses first a blackout and then a giant disco ball that blots out the Sun to cast Townsville into endless night; perfect for his monstrous nightclub. Bubbles must face her fear of the dark as she and her sisters try to bring back the light.
