Toronto’s Lightning Start Sets NHL Playoff Record vs. Atlanta
The Toronto Maple Leafs made NHL playoff history in 1979 with one of the fastest starts the postseason has ever seen.
In Game 2 of their preliminary round series against the Atlanta Flames, Toronto scored three goals in just 23 seconds during the opening period. Darryl Sittler struck twice before Ron Ellis added another, breaking a 60-year-old playoff record previously held by the Montreal Canadiens.
Toronto won the game 7–4 and swept the series, delivering one of the most explosive opening shifts in NHL playoff history.
