Tips for interpreting transits and dashas in astrology
Vedic
Yk, so that there is no need to pay good money to astrologers who give fatalistic predictions that are too specific or too vague. You can, if you want to, try doing it for yourself. Just don't scare yourself in advance, or worry about transits. It's never a good idea.
........
There are a lot of dasha systems and differing opinions on how each of them work. Similarly, transiting planets and their aspects have different effects according to different people. One of the most popularized uses of astrology has been predicting events or outcomes, but with too many ways that astrological influences can manifest, people can get "lost in the sauce" as more and more theories bring more confusion than clarity. In reality, if we restrain the need to know every detail, it can, in fact, be simple.
My first rule of interpreting transits and dashas is: observe them for yourself.
Let's start with an easy example: the Sun. The Sun moves through the twelve signs and the 27 nakshatras the same way every year. It is the most fixed and the steadiest that a planet can be. Also, one month is a good time to sit with an energy, it's long enough for observation and short enough to be specific. Every sign represents different houses for different charts, based on the ascendant sign.
You might notice that every year there are consistent patterns that form or similar events that happen in your life during each month. Maybe every March is a month of introspection, every October a period of progress, or every July_ uneventful. Your unique imprinting that you were given at birth filters that Solar energy and manifests with unique differences each year, based on other planetary influences. Try to remember past Octobers or Decembers or any month you want to get a picture that's clear enough, you might be surprised by how consistent some things are.
It's not just a matter of Sun transiting your certain houses though, Mercury and Venus are always closeby (Mercury can only be one sign away and Venus can be two signs away at max). And all of these planets also aspect your natal planets.
In short, these three planets offer a good way to observe and take note of how transits work for you.
The next planet to sit with would be the Moon.
The interesting thing about it is that it is the fastest moving planet, so there is an opportunity to correct or reaffirm your observations each lunar month. Moon's journey through the day is roughly the same length as one nakshatra. Moon is probably the best planet to track down the influence of nakshatras. As always, the patterns can be more accurate when put in context with individual charts, but they can have general reccuring patterns too. If any of you confirm that you felt like your privacy was invaded, your sense of trust was shattered or your endurance was tested during Ashlesha moon days, for example, I would really like that.
Now, regarding the dashas: observing them for yourself is a little tricky, since most people will never get to experience every mahadasha. I personally use vimshottari dasha, (mahadashas, anyardashas, pryantardashas). Sub-dashas are more effective for tracking, since they include shorter periods. Look out for other points on this post for other tips on dasha analysis.
Second rule: do not automatically place planetary influences from dashas and from transits in the same category.
A lot of the times the overarching themes of planets prevail and are present in both, but it does not mean that they operate in the same way. It's good to remember this.
About theoretical ways to interpret:
This is the most useful for dashas, since there is less opportunity to sufficiently observe them.
Mahadashas are the most prevalent, but antardashas are more acutely felt, at least, according to my experience. Mahadashas indicate large eras/cycles and antardashas indicate the current phase. Pryantardashas can last from a few weeks to about two months. They are even more specific, and a pryantardasha from a benefic (mostly functional benefic rather than general) planet can really contain the bad effects of antardashas or even mahadashas. There are sub-periods even smaller that pryanyardasha but to avoid the infinite division, I only look at the periods that I personally felt the influence of.
A very important point to consider: vimshottari dashas activate the nakshatras that the dasha planet rules, not the planet itself or its placement. Venus mahadhashas/antardashas/pryantardashas activate Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha, for example, and the hojses that these nakshatras occupy. Similarly, that Venus dasha would also activate any planets that are sitting in those nakshatras.
For example, Venus dashas activate my 8th, 12th and 4th houses (Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Pirva Ashadha) and the Moon (the planet that I have in Bharani). Despite the fact that 8th and 12th houses are not pleasant, as a Virgo ascendant, Venus is the best planet for me, and it's alao well placed, so the overal experiences I've had during those dashas I generally remember as positive.
To elaborate on functional benefics and malefics: they are determined by your ascendant sign, and can be easily searched online. I can confidently say that, based on my experience, if a planet that's generally a benefic becomes a functional malefic, its good effects will not be felt so positively by the native. I've had that experience with Jupiter dashas. The reason for that is that the very essence of Jupiter is not easy for me to deal with as a Virgo ascendant, and also as someone who has Jupiter not that well placed(in Gemini). It's not the worst but it's certainly not as good as it would be for a Pisces or Scorpio ascendant, for example.
While looking at the dasha of a planet you should also consider how well placed it is in your chart (which sign, nakshatra, house it occupies and planets sit with it), despite the fact that it won't actually activate that placement (sign, nakshatra, house). As I said, it activates the nakshatras ruled by it, the houses they sit in and the planets that sit in them.
Some of my observations on planetary dashas and transits:
1. When Sun transits your 1st house, you might feel energized and ready to take charge of your own life. Same when Mercury, Venus and/or Mars join it, only the effect is amplified. This might be felt more positively if your natal Sun is in 1st, 5th ot 9th house, or you have other planets in those houses.
2. When Sun transits the sign/point where your Rahu or Saturn sits, prepare for anxiety.
3. Sun, Mercury, Venus and/or Mars transiting through the 1st or the 7th house marks a relatively eventful period, if not externally, then internally.
4. Moon's transit through each nakshatra might be more acutely felt than its transit through signs, although both hold hold influence.
5. Rahu and Ketu are the primary sources of anxiety among transiting planets. Rahu specifically is the indicator of deep anxiety, while Ketu signals detachment and a state of autopilot. Saturn, another planet associated with anxiety, is more of an indicator of nervosness and concern that can be dealt with/helped. Usually, Saturnian worries are rooted in more grounded problems, while Rahuvian worry is often baseless and "up in the air", not easily defined or identified, and can spiral into paranoia. Saturn is the identifiable problem, with a clear solution that's sometimes hard, but doable. So, whichever house Saturn or Rahu transit, can be a source of worry for the native, but only one of them needs attention (Saturn). Rahu's anxiety can be balanced by focusing on the Ketu, which is going to be transiting its opppsite house. But, as it always is the case with Ketu, you should approach it with authenticity and mindfulness before indulging in it thoughtlessly.
6. When a planet transits the sign it's exalted in, it's generally beneficial for everyone, but its beneficial effects might be felt better by people who have that planet as a functional benefic, or by people who have that planet strongly represented in their charts. Same with planets transiting its debilitation signs (or generally unfavorable signs): the negative effects are felt more by the people who have that planet as a functional malefic.
7. If you significantly lack the influence of a planet, then you can have its influence through a dasha period, but not from a dasha of that planet itself (as I said in this post). For example, let's say you have little to no Venusian influence, then you should find the nakshatra that Venus is placed in, for example, Uttara Bhadrapada. Since Uttara Bhadra is ruled by Saturn, you can have Venusian influence from Saturn antardashas, mahadasha or pryantardashas.
