A2K4D + icecairo Solar Energy Meet-Up
On November 1, 2016, A2K4D’s Data Revolution Team held an exciting Meet-Up for the Solar Energy sector.
The event brought together entrepreneurs, lawyers, and researchers, as well as representatives from the International Finance Corporation and the government. Held at icecairo, a green technology hub located on the GrEEK Campus in Downtown Cairo, the event brought about a lively and engaging conversation about aspirations for -- and hesitations toward -- knowledge-sharing between major players in the sector.
Speakers included Dr. Hussein Abaza (Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Environment), who stressed the importance of the green economy, emphasizing the need to acknowledge this strategy as Egypt’s way forward. Marwan Hussein, Program Manager at Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, spoke about why knowledge-sharing is central to the success of solar energy in Egypt.
“No one knows anything about the sector, and this hurts everyone in the end,” offered Ahmed Zahran, CEO of KarmSolar. “People are lacking the most basic information,” added Marwan Hussein.
An overarching theme that structured the conversation was the inconsistency of information in the supply chain. Lawyers in the audience were particularly vexed not only by ever-changing laws, but inconsistencies within different ministries when inquiring about these changes.
A2K4D is currently in the process of constructing a comprehensive digital platform that maps the economy of the solar energy sector, in order to encourage entrepreneurship, fill gaps in the value chain, and collectively improve the economic status of the sector through knowledge-sharing.
The Meet-Up, which aimed to understand challenges in the sector, was the first step in this pursuit.
