A photo of one of the beads in Emily's necklace. It struck me that it might be nice to link the two together - the bead and the tweet. Perhaps every necklace gets a little web page with all the tweets linked to on it?

The Text Data Necklace at the Whitechapel gallery for the Sizzle 6 Data + Art hackday exhibition.

This is a visualisation of the whole of Twitter for the period of 47 days with data provided by Brandwatch. In this case it's a visualisation of activity around the concept of "death".

Each bead is individually sized to relate to the amount of discussion per day on the subject. Along the side of each bead is a single person's name - someone prominent who had an obituary published in the Guardian on that day.

The process can be applied to any time-based data set and you can support this project or pre-order yours via an IndieGogo campaign page.

Day one on IndieGogo

Guys! One day in and you've supported me an eighth of the way there on the Data Necklace IndieGogo campiagn! Thank you all so much. Amazing.

I've already started telling people about the "You're All Awesome" necklace and thinking about how I'm going to make that happen. 

Today's data visualisation suggestions included "A data beanie" (hat made of data - love it), star maps, audio as T-shirts and something to do with bird song and location that I didn't quite grasp.

Then there was the debate because of the amazing coverage in the Huffington Post - are the necklaces still a bit expensive? 

I guess judging on a few comments so far, that yes for some, they are. I'm going to do some work on what I should do about pricing each piece. I've followed classic jewellery-making advice about costs + percentage, which should therefore include any business costs and leave room to pay yourself. 

At the moment my costs to make each individual design are quite high. Just to use my local laser-cutting company is $80 for an hour, not including materials, time creating the visualisations, and actually constructing each piece.

So I've added a new perk to IndieGogo for my early supporters. $250 for a Twitter necklace - look for the First Supporter necklace in the Perks list.

If we were to manage to raise enough to buy a laser cutter that would certainly make experimenting and making a lot easier. Let's see how we go...

The alpha data necklace - a wearable visualisation of @emilyquinton's twitter account. 

Laser-cut and laser-etched in acrylic, with silver chain.

Each pair of long beads corresponds to a month of tweets, with the length of the shorter extrusions corresponding to how often she used the word "love" in a tweet.

Along the sides of the shorter pieces is etched a single tweet from that period to serve as a reminder of that time.
