gonna be hurling myself out the window.
he could see how his decision to live in the school could be strange to anyone else, but to maddox it just made sense. knowledge. growth. those two things felt as integral to him as it was to rebuilding this community. although he'd devoted his time and energy to fixing problems across the entire town, this was where his heart truly lied. there was something so comforting in returning to the library every night and ensuring things were in their place.
it wasn't unusual to have a late night visitor. he didn't own the books; people were free to come and go at their leisure. all that was asked was they added their name to a sign-out sheet with the title of their books so there was so chance at tracking things down if they went missing.
maddox was putting the last of his returned books on a near by shelf when he noticed a familiar figure holding a book up to her face in an attempt to look busy. "hi aspen." he greeted her and turned back to the shelf, only to do a double take. "uh, you..." he waved his hand dismissively before finishing the thought, only to raise his head and start again. "your book's upside down." it was going to bother him if he didn't say something.

hi yea ok it’s been confirmed alfie and i are getting married soon hello
maybe it was the dreamers in them but three years into the apocalypse and the cooper twins were still hung up on what-ifs and should-haves. for maddox there was something almost.. comforting in trying to pinpoint that butterfly effect moment that would've changed everything for them. maybe madison didn't enjoy this game as much as he did, but she at least entertained it for him.
"do you think we'd still be alive if we went home sooner for thanksgiving?" if they'd been at home with their parents when the outbreak started, instead of locked in the city where the infection began. his head was resting on his twin's shoulder but he lifted slightly to check her expression. "i mean, it could've been harder to keep four people alive instead of two." them. mom. dad. that sacred little family unit that they'd always considered themselves part of.
were they still? or was it only the two of them left? he spent a lot of time wondering about that.
