Spoilery thoughts about the Date or Die demo:

I realize that certain lines may be rewritten (or even left out entirely!) by the time the final game is released, but Date or Die’s demo left me wondering about something.

The Host specifically says, “...put the determination, the passion, the hearts of these six contestants to the test. One special winner will have a chance to meet their soulmate. The rest will die.”

Is the plot based upon the idea that you and your love interest will break the rules in order to survive together? Would doing anything for love include cheating to win the game? Seems likely.

But.

Is this the outcome the Host is hoping for-- two people so committed to each other that they’ll challenge the entire system (shades of The Hunger Games, here) in order to save one another? The wording seems to strongly hint that only one person is supposed to survive the game in its entirety. Which brings me to the line that I was particularly curious about: “One special winner will have a chance to meet their soulmate.” This suggests the “soulmate” is a person outside of the game... or, at least, isn’t one of the contestants.

If the contestants play the game according to the Host’s rules, they will in fact eliminate one another until only the cleverest and/or most ruthless contestant remains... who will then, having proven themselves worthy, be allowed to “meet their soulmate.”

So.

Does the Host want the contestants to follow his rules, leaving only one alive, to whatever ends? Or does he hope that two contestants will break the rules for each other’s sake, possibly destroying the game from within?

*puts head in hands* aaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh, I dunno, please hurry up and finish the game!!! I can’t take this fearful ambiguityyyyy
