This date palm seedling overlooks my work as I research deeper histories and uses of the plants that I grow. Date palms have been around for 50 million years according to fossil records. It is believed that their first cultivation began in the area around what is now known as Iraq. They were eaten and made into date wine in ancient Egypt, and have been in use for at least 10,000 years in what is now Pakistan. My partner Chris was eating dates last year and as he often does, put a pit in one of our potted plants. Now we have a new friend whose existence, like ours, echoes millennia of ancestors. #datepalm #seedkeeping (at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
