Me trying my best to not send a repeat question. I'll throw a ball here. How does your design process go for designing characters?
Haha it’s no worries if I get repeats :D This is a good question though omg. I apologize in advance because this answer is gonna get LONG, since I honestly just really like going into the details and nuances of it! My design philosophy changes depending on the character to be honest! Normally I’ll get inspired by something in the media or have an idea for a character and start looking up references for outfits, get songs that remind me of them and then do a sketch or two that hammers down my idea haha. Most of the time i’ll jump directly into a fullbody and start designing right off the bat into making a reference sheet! This was the philosophy with one of my ocs, Allistor who I designed based off a few various different things that came together well into one character!
Other times though I’ll do a crude sketch or concept doodle for a character to get the idea down, and endup doing the fullbody reference later! This was the case with one of Reshi’s other AU’s where I made a chibi design first then did the fullbody after I got the colors down!
And then other times I’ll just make a doodle on ibis paint for my concept!
This is Hunter, who I wanted to be this punky guy that likes loud metal music haha. I was inspired my Sally Face and various zombie beat em up games when making him! I end up listening to music that inspires me when designing the character and it helps me keep my motivation up while drawing. I also like to think about the placement of colors and the contrast and where the eye can rest too, busy designs have easily gotten the best of me.
When it comes to pokemon gijinka designs, I like to base them loosely off the region they originate from, and keep as much of the base design represented as possible! I like to base their outfits off of the feeling the regions give me, so while Lugia has a more pristine design, Reshi feels more modern but still as regal as the former. Making Mega Rayquaza proved a challenge because I had too many ideas but I wanted to keep the feel of his normal design as well, along with making him feel more godly. If a design starts to confuse me I’ll typically ask my best friend for help since she also designs characters too and we’ll go back and forth until I’m satisfied!
You can see that I wanted the delta symbol to appear over his head in the concept doodle and to keep his chest bare to resemble the pokemon, but I ended up changing the design in the end to help it flow better and resemble his non-mega form more! It also helps to see what other people have done with gijinkas to get ideas as a reference! I wanted to keep more of the mega design, but to risk overcomplication would also risk me never drawing the design! It’s important to me to keep the design detailed but simple, because I want to come back to draw them later without burning out.
I know I rambled alot here but I really wanted to explain some of it, and touch on alot of things that help me design! Alot of my ocs have originated from official characters, been inspired by fan ocs, music, video games, and even dungeons and dragons! Inspiration for me comes from plenty of places so there’s never an end of ideas to draw from haha. Thank you so much for the question I really enjoyed answering this one!!
Bleh…missin Jsrf and dmc again,,, kinda wanna work on Grace and Glory again but im crunching for artfight so i dunno, i should go back to it eventually
In the meantime, self indulgent sketches of my oc meeting Beat: cus of course he would be intrigued with someone skating with magic and want to show off!!! Beat gives me the most confidence when it comes to all the gg’s, and he can back up the skills lmao. Silly doodles.
sneak peek for the next pages of Grace and Glory under the cut :))
