This love was big enough for the both of us
This love of yours
Was big enough to be frightened of
It's deep and dark like the water was
The day I learned to swim

I wanna talk about datv ending and its hidden beauty.
Just 3 tiny thoughts.
It's the end. No second chances, no loopholes. Solas stands there, ready to go, right before the Veil rift. It certainly is a last step before the abyss.
And a perfect moment to remember one advice:
"We stand upon the precipice of change. The world fears the inevitable plummet into the abyss. Watch for that moment... and when it comes, do not hesitate to leap. It is only when you fall that you learn whether you can fly."
So, he stands there and "his back turned". But this time it isn't "story unfinished".
Dreadwolf' story is a circle. He turned his back away from the Fade to follow Mythal - he turned his back away from evanuris to start a rebellion - he turned his back away from Felassan - he turned his back away from the Inquisition.
Finally, in the end he turned his back again. But this time it's not because he had no strength to face guilt and regrets - this time he's ready to move forward freely. Circle is finally closed.
The look
Solas is ready to leave this world and Inquisitor said she wants to go with him. He doesn't ask, he doesn't make promises of a better life but he clearly wants she by his side. (Of course, he is. Nobody is eager to spend an eternity alone).
He did stop to wait for her, but didn't turn around. And it isn't about the need to show himself as confident or stoic, it isn't about pride either. It is a last chance for her to change mind, to stay in this world, to start a new life, a real life. Solas knows it would be difficult for her to see his face and look in the eyes and say she doesn't want to leave the real world. He doesn't want she feel obliged to go because he stands here tired, sad and injured and looks at her with wet puppy wolf eyes in expectation. It wouldn't be fair. So he stands before the rift, waiting in silence, not moving at all, giving her a chance to stand back. If she wouldn't come closer, he would go alone with no questions.
But she chose him, it changed everything, and Solavellan hell turned into Solavellan heaven, yay.
I have one particular thought that annoys me.
Look, the ending solavellan got is the only good option they had (considering datv writing, story and circumstances). They're together, not entirely dead and got this "happy ever after". Even if it's a corrective labor camp based in the blighted abyss and isolated from the "real" world.
But the thought that haunts me: Solas wouldn't do it for Inquisitor.
She had no second thoughts. Just "let's do this, babe". Left the whole world behind, i.e. left her friends and/or family and life she had. Sacrificial love gesture raised to the absolute.
Swap them, and he wouldn't do this.
Solas is loyal to his ideals and delusions. If he has ✨a goal✨ he would obsessively pursue it like a dread hound until he succeeded. Elven war with Titans, rebellion, punishment to the evanuris. Those are hard-won victories.
He stepped back just once and it took the efforts of many who knew him and talked him down. More to it, the Veil plan was a redemption ride, it was personal and he was doing it for himself (no matter how he was trying to explain this). That's another reason why they can talk him down - Solas is never invested much in himself. Most of his lifetime was dedicated to the needs of others, not his. Something personal isn't that important as the "real goal".
Homemade psychoanalysis session is over. Back to the point.
Solas wouldn't do this for Lavellan because it's against his nature. Not because he does not love her enough. But it would've become another goal. Problem to solve and injustice to eradicate. He can do this, he can find a solution, he can fix it - he is the Pride after all.
POV: you're trying to explain to everyone why they're stupid and you're not because you are the Dread Wolf
He would've stayed, he would've destroyed the Veil to crush the prison, or he would've found a solution even worse. And nobody would've persuaded him to stop (as it was before and nobody could stop him when he was in "avenging mythal" mode).
That would be a real dark ending. Hopeless circled trap of repetitive mistakes. Intriguing though. Sadly, datv has no variable story decision options, so it stuck in my head rent free.

The kiss
I do love the nose move 👀 He's literally pressed his nose against her cheek trying to be even closer than they're already. That's sweet.

SPOILER WARNING
I love how Lavellan literally did the legally blonde thing in the end and outsmarted Solas with "banal nadas, at lath ma vhenan".
She could've brought up any possible argument but instead she outplayed the Pride by returning his own words to him.
Banal nadas, said Solas to the Nightmare in "Here Lies The Abyss" in DAI. Nothing is inevitable. (or There is no fate)
Ar lath ma vhenan, said Solas to Lavellan in the balcony confession scene in DAI. I love you, my heart.
That's a pro-move, really. But not like they're playing a mind chess or any sort of game. She, undoubtedly, is speaking from the heart. There's no lies in that. That's more about the understanding. Cole said, "In his own way, he [Solas] knew wisdom, as no man or spirit had before". So as Lavellan knows now.
In "Trespasser DLC" she tried to speak with Solas. She tried to convince him and appeal to the man he was in DAI. It was Wisdom she addressed to.
In DATV she's talking to Dreadwolf. She can't temper the pride by talking it down. And she found the right way because what can be more convincing than his own words? It's the Pride she addresses to.
The approach she chose to change his mind is only showing she knows him. "You saw more than most", he said in DAI. And it's true. Lavellan knows him, knows his strengths and flaws, virtues and sins. Not trying to rip him apart, reshape him or change his nature by denying the Dreadwolf side. She sees him, accepts him and loves him unconditionally.
He suffered enough and deserved some peace but, Maker be my witness, he's lucky to have her on his side. This woman carries the love so bright it could blind all Thedas.
