So hygge is a Danish word that translates roughly to ‘cosiness’, though it has a very broad definition. From the VisitDenmark page:
In essence, hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. The warm glow of candlelight is hygge. Friends and family – that’s hygge too. There's nothing more hygge than sitting round a table, discussing the big and small things in life.
It’s a peculiar thing mostly found in Scandinavia where the sun isn’t as common in the colder months, so this is a way that the Scandinavians counteract seasonal depression through this concept that is simply known as ‘hygge’. It can be as little as having a hot beverage, wrapping yourself in a blanket, or can be as big as spending time with family and friends and just enjoying each other’s company around a fireplace.
