"The final blow was struck..." - Being involved in multiple projects at work and at home, it's been a while since I've been able to sit down to do something I want to do just for fun (and I'll try to do that more often). Genndy Tartokovsky's animated series: "Samurai Jack" was a favorite of mine growing up, and the show's approach to cinematic compositions, action, timing, contrast of sound and silence, and episodic storytelling have been big influences on my work and my artistic journey into animation. I'm excited to see where the story goes in Season 5 as it comes to its long awaited conclusion. - With this poster, I wanted to take the narrative themes carried out in the beginning of Season 5 (first 3 episodes to this point) and combine them with the visual aesthetic from one of the background paintings used in the original series intro which iconically places a white silhouette of Jack at the foot of a towering black silhouette of Aku, emerging from swooping firey brushstrokes. The visual identity of this show has always been wrapped around white vs. black on a background of red, so I wanted to play with that visual language to create a new image that uses the same rules to draw on the new themes (and characters, of course). - I don't want to give away any spoilers for folks who haven't been watching the series or keeping up with the it as a whole, but if you are watching it, and geeking out about it every week (barring the April Fool's interruption from last night, which, incidentally, gave me more time to work on this painting), I wanted to use color and composition to reflect the dramatic turn in season 5, and the effect it has on the series as a whole moving forward. - Anyway, I hope you enjoy it, as we look forward to finding out whether or not Jack gets #backtothepast - #samuraijack #jackisback #daughtersofaku #Aku #illustration #posterdesign #poster #instagram #instagramart #animationart #animatedseries #digitalpainting #genndytartakovsky #scottwills @scott.wills #adultswim #toonami #mrbirm #cartoonnetwork #jackjackjack
