Giblin Assn. to Hold Annual Community Service Awards and Charity Breakfast Dec. 1 at Mayfair Farms in West Orange

    MONTCLAIR, N.J., November 18, 2013 – The annual Community Service Awards and Charity Breakfast sponsored by the Giblin Association will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, December 1, at Mayfair Farms in West Orange.

The event is open to the public and tickets are $40 each. For information, contact Kevin Frey at 973-808-0022. The Giblin Association is a civic and charitable organization founded in 1954 by the late state Sen. John Giblin  (D-Essex). The association supports a wide-variety of civic, cultural and community organizations throughout the state. The organization’s current standard-bearer is Assemblyman Thomas P. Giblin (D-34th Dist.).

2013 Community Service Award recipients:

•    Renee E. Baskerville, M.D., of Montclair, is a pediatrician who for five years has served as 4th Ward councilor in Montclair. (Government)

•    Erica Daughtrey of Bayonne, a community activist, serves on the staff of U.S. Rep. Albio Sires (D, 8th District, N.J.). (Civic)

•    Amparo Caamaño of Clifton. A leader among the 250,000 members of the Dominican Republic community in New Jersey, she is president of Hermandad Dominicana, a civic, cultural and recreational organization. (Heritage)

•    Debbie DuHaime of Bloomingdale, a traffic reporter in the New York area who also hosts a public affairs program on which she interviews New Jersey legislators. (Media)

 •    Lionel Leach of Newark two years ago at age 43 became the youngest — and first African-American male — to hold the post of president of New Jersey-based Local 1039 of the Communication Workers of America. (Labor)

 •    Capt. Kevin Sooy of Bernardsville, who serves as Bernardsville Borough Council president, has 20 years’ service with the Orange Police Dept. and has worked more than 100 homicides, as well as kidnapping, organized crime and sex crime cases. (Public Safety)

2013 Charities Chosen to Receive $1,000. Donations:

 •    Michael T. McCormick, Jr. Memorial Foundation is a nonprofit based in West Orange providing secondary and college scholarships to outstanding individuals who share the leadership and scholarship qualities Michael epitomized. A third-generation Seton Hall Prep graduate, Michael had his life cut short tragically at age 19 by a car accident.

•    Nassan’s Place, based in East Orange, is a nonprofit organization providing educational and recreational programs for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the urban community.

•    SOFIA (Start Out Fresh Intervention Advocates), based in Montclair, is a nonprofit organization providing advocacy, supportive services and referrals for temporary housing to women and children at risk of domestic violence.

•    Church by the Side of the Road, an outreach ministry based in Passaic, is led by Senior Pastor Theresa Nance. Rev. Nance was the first woman to head the Chief Chaplaincy position at the Passaic County Jail in Paterson. She later began outreach support for women released from the penal system. A former Herald News columnist, she writes a column for The Positive Community and The Christian Observer.

Co-Chairs of the 2013 Breakfast are Robert P. Marasco of Newark, Newark city clerk; and Lauren Murphy of Clifton, president of the Professional Workers Association union of Passaic County.
