Inglewood, CA (News4usOnline) - The wide receiver room for the Los Angeles Rams has a different makeup this season. This year marks the 12th season that Davante Adams has played in the league. This is his first with the Rams.  Despite being around the block or two as a veteran player, playing in a Week 1 football game still brings excitement for Adams. “I think it’s a great opportunity to just start fresh regardless of what happened the year before,” Adams said during the week before the Rams played the Houston Texans. “For a new player coming to a new team like this it’s just a clean slate. You can't really ask for much more than that. You come in fresh. It's the healthiest the team is going to be. It’s just a new opportunity to be able to go out there and put it on display. I'm excited for it.”

The third-year wideout practically grew up watching Adams destroy defenders as a longtime member of the Green Bay Packers, and later with the Las Vegas Raiders and the New York Jets.  Now that Adams has been paired alongside him as the team’s starting targets for quarterback Matthew Stafford to throw to, Nacua is just excited about that opportunity.   “To think that my locker is going to be next to his as we're putting on the same uniform is still super exciting. It feels surreal, but I know it's going to be a headache for the defense across from us,” Nacua said.   The wide receiving tandem of Adams and Nacua, on paper, has the ability to be a dominant duo that brings fear to the rest of the league. Going into the season, Adams had already picked up 103 touchdown passes for his career. Nacua came on the scene in 2023 and lit up the NFL during his rookie campaign, catching 105 passes for 1,486 yards and six touchdowns in 17 games. Not a bad impression.  However, an injury suffered by Nacua in the Rams’ first game against Detroit sidelined him for a quarter of the season. Nacua wound up playing just 11 games and caught 79 passes for 990 yards and three scores. While he is one of the league's rising talents, Nacua admits there is room for improvement. The one area Nacua said he'd like to get better at is catching the football. During the 2023 season, Nacua was targeted 160 times. Last season, he had a total of 106 passes thrown his way.   “I'd say catching the ball, having no drops is something and then just my lateral abilities, especially at the line of scrimmage,” Nacua said. “Knowing that when we had the opportunity to get to work with Davante Adams, the ability to add that to my arsenal.

Photo credit: Mark Hammond / News4usOnline “I feel like the strength of route running and being able to catch the ball and the physicality in the run game were some of my strengths, but then being able to feel like I am the backside receiver in some of our concepts and to be able to win our one-on-ones on the backside, just to be more consistent in that specific part of my game has been something I feel like I've improved on especially,” Nacua went on to say.  Against the Texans, the official tandem of Adams and Nacua had an auspicious debut. The first half of the ballgame was nothing to write home about. With the offense looking scattershot, Adams caught one pass for three yards.  Nacua fared better with five catches for 66 yards as the Rams trailed 9-7 after two quarters of play. Stafford finished the half with 73 yards through the air. Before LA's encounter with the Texans, Adams already knew what time it was with Houston’s defense and gave them their flowers.   “They have some really good individual talent,” Adams said. “I think it's one of the best as far as star-studded teams across the board on defense. I have a lot of respect for them on every level, too. Up front they have the big two that everybody knows about , but they got some good interior guys. Their backers play really hard and they have some guys on the back end that know how to play as well. It’ll be fun. It'll be a good challenge.”

With just seven points on the scoreboard at intermission, Stafford and the Rams needed to kick their offense into another gear to pull out the victory at SoFi Stadium.  It wasn’t pretty, but the Rams managed to grind their way to a 14-9 win. Stafford finished the game completing 21 of 29 passes for 245 yards and a touchdown.  Out of Stafford’s 29 passing attempts for the game, 19 of those throws went in the direction of Adams and Nacua. Nacua was targeted 11 times and caught 10 passes for 130 yards. Adams finished his day with four catches for 51 yards.      Both players had their bright moments against the Texans. Adams made some critical catches. Nacua recorded the 13th game of his career of 100 yards or more receiving and had the luxury of catching the pass that made Stafford the 10th person to throw for 60,000 yards or more in a career.  “He’s a special player,” Stafford said of Nacua. “He’s a special person on our team. His game comes to life on Sundays. He goes out there in practice and he’s working. He is doing all this stuff. He's making plays and all that, but when it becomes tackle football is when Puka Nacua's game comes to life.”    Read the full article

Davante Adams is good as advertised

Los Angeles, CA (News4usOnline) - The history of the Los Angeles Rams is laced with some pretty good wide receivers. The names of Flipper Anderson, Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt, Harold Jackson, and Henry Ellard immediately come to mind when discussing the all-time greats.  Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods are in that conversation as well. After signing a two-year deal with the Rams earlier this year, Davante Adams very well could join this exclusive party. It would not be too hard to see this scenario playing out.  Eleven seasons in, Adams remains one of the elite wide receivers in the NFL. When the Rams signed Adams to a two-year deal in the offseason, they were not treading down memory lane for an all-time great whose best days have faded.

His career numbers (957 receptions, 11, 844 yards in receiving, and 103 touchdowns)  are self-explanatory, Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur said.   “Obviously, his numbers and his career are speaking for itself,” LaFleur said after a training camp practice. “He’s in such great shape physically. He's in such great shape mentally. He’s just having fun being out here. It’s training camp. We haven't put the pads on or anything like that, so it still has resemblance of OTAs obviously. When you get just even a little bit closer and you get through the summer, you can see the guys kick up a little bit. He’s in such a good spot. It’s like he's been here the whole time, so it's great to have him.” After spending the bulk of his career playing with one Hall of Fame quarterback, the tantalizing prospect of Adams catching passes from another future HOF inductee in Matthew Stafford is exciting to Adams.  That quarterback-to-wide receiver symmetry, however, will have to take a backseat for a while until Stafford can get back on the field. As of now, Stafford has not taken reps during training camp. That might be cause for concern for most people, but not Rams head coach Sean McVay.  “I don't have any reason to be concerned,” McVay said.  With that said, adjustments have to be made. By his response, Adams doesn’t seem too worried, either.  “Obviously, on paper you'd love to have everybody be healthy, but that's just not the reality of how football goes,” said Adams. “There's going to be days where maybe I'm not going to or somebody else isn't and you find ways to still make it work.”  Adams looks better than the hype. It’s one thing to see Adams on a television screen running past defenders and making earth-deying catches. It’s quite different seeing Adams up close and in person. Adams makes the difficult look effortless and routine. He looks like he’s having fun.

Photo credit: Mark Hammond/News4usOnline More importantly, after spending the 2024 season with the New York Jets and Las Vegas Raiders, he feels like he’s right at home playing for the Rams, which has been “surprising in good ways,” Adams said.  “Just not expecting things to be as good as what they seem and because that's often not how it goes. It's usually not as sweet… ‘everything that glitter isn’t gold’, but it's just looking pretty golden over here,” he remarked. “Like I said to Sean earlier, it doesn't guarantee us to go and win a Super Bowl or win 10 games or one game. It just gives you opportunity when you have the right people and the right mindset. Starting it off, it puts you in a good spot and I feel it's a prerequisite to be able to be a championship caliber team,” Adams went on to say.  It was Adams’ turn to take to the podium after a recent training camp practice during which he produced more than a few plays that generated raucous oohs and aahs sprinkled with loud applause.

Freeman/News4usOnline Adams tackled a myriad of subjects in his brief press conference, from mentoring younger teammates,  taking reps from other quarterbacks not named Matthew Stafford, and his conversations with McVay after practices.  “I value it every time. It may seem organic, but sometimes I seek it,” Adams said. “I'll see him over there and I go walk over, and I just know he’s going to say something either funny or something that we can all grow from. He's just that type of person. It's become a really natural connection between him and I.” The uniqueness of Adams as one of the top receivers in the NFL goes beyond the five straight seasons of 1,000 yards or more in receiving that he has recorded. His greatness as a pass-catcher extends past the 100-plus touchdown receptions that he has hauled in during his career.  McVay is a big fan of Adams as a football player. He is an even bigger admirer of the wide receiver and what he does off the field.  “I think you're getting to know the things that are important to him, his family, what a great father and what a great husband he is,” McVay stated. “He’s picked up a real passion for golf and he's pretty damn good at it. But he's also pretty good at football and passionate about that. Rams find symmetry at OTAs

Woodland Hills, CA (News4usOnline) - The Los Angeles Rams kicked off their organized team activities (OTAs) with some fresh new faces and with some familiar ones as well. One of the latest additions to the tight end room is former Oregon hybrid Terrance Ferguson.  Ferguson was drafted by the Rams in the second round with the 46th pick overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. He made a good impression on Rams head coach Sean McVay. “Terrance has been good,” McVay said. “Really today was the first day that we could do 11-on-11. These guys got here a couple weeks ago, seen a guy that's been really attentive in meetings, got a really good feel. Really it's routes on air and then what we saw today, which is a limited body of work, but just been really impressed with him and really the rookie class as a whole.

So far, so good,” McVay added.  There are a lot of storylines and interests around the Rams as they prepare this summer for the 2025 NFL regular season. After all, the Rams had the eventual Super Bowl LIX champs - the Philadelphia Eagles - on the brink of a possible upset in the divisional round of an NFC playoff game last season.  McVay and the Rams superseded expectations last season. That will not be the case in 2025. Due to their success in 2024 and their current personnel makeup, the Rams are expected to contend for the NFC title.  Without question, LA is one of the elite teams in the conference. A key free agency pickup and exemplary picks in the NFL Draft give credence to the thought that the Rams can be THAT team in the NFC.     Davante Adams, the mercurial wide receiver, has now been paired up with Puka Nacua to give the Rams a formidable receiving tandem. The return of Tutu Atwell gives Los Angeles another downfield field burner who can stretch defenses.   Last season, the Rams were just one playmaker away from expanding an already creative offense. Adding Adams, who once starred for the Green Bay Packers, Las Vegas Raiders, and New York Jets, to a backfield that includes Nacua, quarterback Matthew Stafford, and running back Kyren Williams makes LA’s offense highly potent.   His physical attributes notwithstanding, Adams has won over McVay by fitting into the team's concept seamlessly.

Freeman/News4usOnline “I think the first thing I've been really impressed with his willingness to share, his openness and his refreshing humility in terms of being coached but then being able to offer his insight,” McVay remarked. “It's fun to be able to listen to…he and Matthew have a dialogue of their accumulated experiences and getting on the same page for how they want to be able to do things. But he's been great.”  “Similar to what I was just saying about Terrence, but he's been great in the meetings, incredibly detail-oriented. You can see how smart he is,” McVay went on to say. “There are a couple things that are new in terms of the vernacular, but a lot of this stuff is same as or maybe just a couple subtle tweaks. But his ability to be able to learn, his ability to be able to listen and then ultimately lead has been a big factor.”  As a wide receiver, Adams has it all. He’s big. He’s fast. He has an uncoachable twitch. He can do things with the football that not too many people can, and that’s why he is the premier wideout in the game. It was only one day of OTAs, but Stafford enjoyed the symmetry with Adams.   “Oh, it was good,” Stafford commented on that connection. “It's always a work in progress. We're always talking out there, which is a lot of fun. A guy that's a veteran player, has played a lot of football, and had a lot of success, so it's fun just trying to communicate as much as I can with him.
