This sounds embarrassing but I have never voted in my entire ‘voting’ life. You might judge me for not exercising my rights to vote but well.. I never did. Probably 1). because I was too lazy to join the bandwagon of those would-be registered voters who wakes up in the wee hours of the morning to join the long and winding queue to have themselves registered for the upcoming election; 2). I feel like my vote wouldn’t count because in all honesty my country, sad as it may seemed, plays the dirtiest games in the world of politics. From people who run for councilors, governors, congressman, the Senate and those wannabes with a wider and bigger political aspirations who uses hollow promises to people as a stepping stone enroute to Malacañang office. So no, thank you. And lastly, I have never found an extraordinary person with whom I wouldn’t mind waking up early to get myself registered. I was (and still am) away from Davao when I first heard and read from the internet that our Mayor Rodrigo Duterte would file his candidacy for presidency. It was still in grapevine but day by the day and month after month I hear positive feedbacks that Duterte would push it. And I hope this time he would.
The first time I saw our mayor up close and personal was when he visited a female lone survivor whose whole family was massacred including a 3 year-old child by a two drug-crazed suspects way back September 2004. He came to our unit (CCU) and asked for the bed number of such patient (it was a medico-legal case hence no name was written outside identifying the patient’s confinement). Boy, I was starstrucked. And I’m never the starstruck kind. His voice was so polite, not commanding. And oh my, he’s got charm! Amidst his calm nature shines a leader – the ones with true grit, compassion, a heart of a horse, a king Solomon version 10.0 and a salt of the earth like no other. He didn’t came wearing a traditional politician’s attire. Just a polo shirt and denim pants like the ones we always see when he’s being interviewed by the media. It was then on that I promised myself that if this man runs for a higher position then he would surely have 100% of my vote. No doubt about that.
Months ago, I rang the Philippine embassy in Wellington and asked if I am still eligible to register and apply for it so I can vote for this coming election. My heart sank when the kabayan told me over the line that filing for newly registered was up until October 2015 only. So I let it go and entrusted everything to prayers that heaven would send a doer and not just a leader to redeem my country. A letter came in my mail yesterday and my heartstrings did a whole lot of dancing. I can finally vote! My first ever! I just hope my vote (and the rest of the Filipinos outside the country) counts because we truly wanted someone who makes our vote worthwhile. And I hope this time the people behind the counting of the ballot boxes will not be dazzled by the golden carrot that politicians would dangle right in front of their very eyes in order for them to win.
I’m already a proud Davaoeña. I hope one day I’ll be able to say that I am one proud Filipina. And when the day comes that I’ll finally step on the tarmac of the Philippine airport after all these years that I have been away from my native soil, I’d be able to tell myself that “I am glad to be home because this is the place where I am safest with.”

Everyone has their own challenges… everyone has their own journey
It is meaningless to compare one with the other. We all need our own time to travel our own distance. It’s perfectly OK to be different. Today, the only person you should try to be better than, is the person you were yesterday.
