Happy Christmas to me! I had recommended this purchase to my local library @cadlibrary ages ago, with a link to how libraries can order books from Dancing Star Press at a steep discount. So, I put my beads away for a long, long time — because I just had too many projects and side projects going. But of course I knew it was just a matter of time before I designed a pair of #bookcovercoordinated earrings for SHE WHO HEARS ALL WHISPERS. These seriously took me half a day to make, from color design to picking the earwires. It seems I am a bit out of practice! Set in an alternate universe where entire cities are powered by the suffering of the residents infected with a disease that comes from the sea, this book explores the revenge plot of a grieving mother filled with fury at the woman who orchestrates this suffering. Like any good novella, the books jumps right into the world and the action, and it engages you from start to finish. I loved the language in the book, I loved the imagery, and I loved that it was racialized. I can see why Sanders is no stranger to Hugo Awards, this book was a treat. Favorite books of the year so far for #riotgrams. I tried to restrict myself to books published this year (so far), but half of these are cheats. It turns out Tentacle was actually published last year, but of course it was going on this list. And She Who Hears All Whispers isn’t TECHNICALLY published yet (Out July 23rd! Pre-orders open! Link in bio!) but it isn’t as if I haven’t read it several times and don’t have boxes of it in my house, so... The Bride Test seems off brand for me, but really is almost exactly the book I was wistfully wishing for for months when in my feels about certain Autism-spectrum characters in fandom but couldn’t find.
