Friday Reads Nov 6

While the first week of November 2020 was stressful, I did what I could to keep calm. The books I became drawn to during the past few days include Descent into Chaos by Ahmed Rashid. It is a nonfiction book about the United States and Afghanistan that was published in 2009. Many things have happened since then, but only now I am diving into the collection of books I have collected on the subject. I received notice there are more waiting at the library.

Speaking of library books, of the ones I have checked out, I became interested in reading The Blue Guitar by John Banville. I made it to page 50 and find it soothing and comforting, even though it is a bit mournful. It is about a painter in his middle ages as he reminisces about art, life and love. I see it as a slow leisurely read, so I will return to this. Meanwhile, a few other library books have risen to the top of the TBR pile again. They are books I have begun, but I put them aside as due dates for other books were coming up.

Okay, like I said, I got a little over-enthusiastic? distracted? overwhelmed? trying to pick one favorite Black literature book for #blacklitchallenge, so I started a stack, and that stack became many stacks. Today’s stack is Black speculative fiction, science fiction and fantasy, whatever you want to call it. This time I was actually strict with the one book per author rule, which was particularly difficult for Octavia Butler, but I persevered. I loved all of these books and would recommend them all. . . Tiny short descriptions for each! PARABLE OF THE SOWER — The first book I read by Butler and still my favorite. Depressingly plausible near-future scifi plus empaths. . SHE WHO HEARS ALL WHISPERS — Corrupt magical systems, magical disease, seaside ecology and a bereaved mother out for vengeance . A RUIN OF SHADOWS — Badass older black woman protagonist, assassin army, bloody fight scenes, and a wise-cracking djinn. . BINTI — Girl leaves home to follow her dreams, but with math magic, interstellar empathy, and tentacle hair. First in an amazing trilogy. . THE BLACK GOD’S DRUMS — An alternate post-Civil War New Orleans with steamships and resistance nuns and mind-controlling gas and African orisha. . PYM — Brilliant send-up of racism and rugged individualism in the form of “What if THE NARRATIVE OF ARTHUR GORDON PYM OF NANTUCKET by Poe was a true story?” . ESCAPING EXODUS — Joyfully weird world-building with space octopus creatures, macro microflora and bioengineering. Queer black characters in a generation ship story with a twist. . THE FIFTH SEASON — You already know, but what if geology was magic? I put off this post for #blackspeculativefictionmonth for weeks because I can’t find my copy of The Shadowed Sun (The second book in the Dreamblood Duology) despite several searches and it is annoying me terribly. But in the end, I couldn’t let that keep me from featuring one of the most amazing authors in sff today, N.K.Jemisin. I got to hear her on a panel once at Book Riot Live, and she is as amazing and thoughtful in person as she is in her writing. The Dreamblood Duology has a special place in my heart because it is where I discovered Jemisin, but the Broken Earth Trilogy is the series she won THREE CONSECUTIVE HUGOS for, and it’s for good reason. Her worldbuilding is truly fantastic, and her characters flawed and strong and messy and real. These two books came out yesterday and I could not resist scooping them up immediately. As you probably know, I’ve had Escaping Exodus on pre-order FOREVER. So long, in fact, they had to email me and re-authorize my credit card. I knew that Tristan Strong was coming out, but didn’t know exactly when, but when I saw they were coming out the same day and looked SO LOVELY together, it felt like a sign. Listen, my credit card bill said I had no business buying it, but I have a hard time saying no to a thing outside of my budget when that thing is a book. Especially when it’s a book for my kids. . . So, Tristan Strong is now on my kids’ bedtime story shelf, and I think I am going to TRY to save Escaping Exodus for Dewey’s Readathon oxt weekend. And now I need to NOT SPEND ANY MONEY ON BOOKS FOR A WHILE.
