Here’s a great interpretation of a classic jazz standard. The song originally appeared in the musical revue Blackbirds of 1928 which included other hit songs sung by Adelaide Hall, “Bandana Babies” and “I Must Have That Man”.
The story goes that songwriters Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh were missing a smash hit for the revue. They were walking down New York’s Fifth Avenue when they overheard a couple peering in the window display at Tiffany’s. They heard the man say, “Gee, honey I’d like to get you a sparkler like that, but right now, I can’t give you nothin’ but love!”
The song has been recorded by many artists including Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Louis Jordon, Dean Martin, and the Mills Brothers and featured in the soundtracks for The Green Mile and Jersey Boys. Notably, it has been recently interpreted by Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett.
