Dave Ellis Blues Band - Straight Up

In the decades since the death of the man who revolutionised blues many players have come along and offered a one dimensional and unoriginal take on the blues that owes nothing to what came before Stevie Ray and solely offers a facsimile of the full on, flat out moments of what was an immensely varied musical output. There’s a reason I’m leading with that statement when I’m reviewing an album, and it’s not necessarily the obvious one.

The 2015 album from the Dave Ellis  Blues Band, entitled Straight Up, exists fully and squarely in the world of post SRV blues, and the great man’s influence is on plain view. However, while there are plenty of moments of incendiary guitar mangling, there are just as many points of startling subtlety, and as many again where musical risks are taken. This isn’t one of those records that’s only going to impress with brute force.

While the electric guitar playing is great, what really impresses is the Dobro playing on tracks like Rattlesnake Hide. There are a couple of songs on the record that exist in a place that owes more to the blues of the 1930’s brought up to date, they are songs for dancing played by a man who’s chasing soul, volume and boogie from an acoustic instrument, and he’s prepared to beat it until it gives up the goods. It’s these moments, just as visceral and exciting as the big solos, that mark the album’s real high points.

As a vocalist Dave is technically no great shakes, he hasn’t much range, and, here at least, he doesn’t do subtle. The thing is that it doesn’t matter, he does have soul and tone, and, far more important than the bells and whistles vocal runs, he tells a story, getting a message across in a concise and effective manner, and the throaty rasp suits the records gritty contents to a tee.

Overall this is a record with grit and guts, some good songs, some great guitar playing and a sense of drive and push that so many people leave on stage and forget to bring to the studio. More importantly it’s a blues record, not a blues-rock record, a blues record and it proves that the genre still has the intensity and power to captivate.
