Chick Corea Dead at 79
Chick Corea, the trailblazing jazz keyboardist who played in Miles Davis’ band and later founded Return to Forever, has died at age 79.
Corea died Feb. 9 of a rare cancer that has been recently diagnosed, his family said in a Feb. 11 statement. They remembered him as “a beloved husband, father and grandfather and a great mentor and friend to so many.”
Knowing his death was imminent, Corea left a statement of his own in which he encouraged anyone with an “inkling to play, write (or) perform” to do so.
“And to my amazing musician friends who have been like family to me as long as I’ve known you: It has been a blessing and an honor learning from and playing with all of you.”
Those friends took to social media to return the praise. Tommy Igoe called Corea “perhaps my No. 1 musical hero;” Dave Koz eulogized him as “a true great;” and John Mayer said Corea “was the single greatest improvisational musician I have ever played with.”
“I am so grateful for all the lifetimes of music we shared,” Bobby McFerrin said.
The composer of “Spain,” “500 Miles High” and “Windows” among other jazz standards, Corea played with Davis until 1970 and two years later helped to establish fusion by co-founding Return to Forever.
Béla Fleck remembered Corea as “my hero, mentor and friend” and offered condolences to family, friends and fans.
“The world has lost one of the great ones,” Fleck said. “I’m so honored to have known him.”
String Cheese Incident keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth said Corea was “one of the greats;” Living Colour’s Vernon Reid was “stunned” by the loss and Sheila E. said “this man changed my life through his music.”
“I wanna be him when I grow up,” ?iestlove said of Corea, whom he called an “immortal, colorful master.”
“Rest in melody,” he said.

“One of the best nights I can remember—last night’s benefit in SF for #BringChangeToMind to erase the stigma of mental health issues. On hand backstage, honoree Ben Stiller, Darren Criss, Dave &Violet Grohl, Charles Jones, Scott Nevins, Rami Jaffe, Margaret Cho & JB Smoove...raised a ton of $ for a great organization helping HS kids. #unforgettablegroup“
