Unlike A Rom-Com [Dave Lizewski]
Angst
Because of course the rain starts to pour when you're confessing your dying love to your superhero crush.
Uuhhh idk I watched Kick Ass 2 finally. I thought Night-Bitch was kind of an unnecessary character but whatever.
Quick warning for a suicide mention but nothing terrible happens dont worry.
No one's perspective

Your parents moving your whole life to Staten Island wasn't really a good choice for your mental health. Sure, you had your friends... On the other side of the USA!! It was hard to find time to call or text them over Skype through the moving and settling in, and wandering around. 3 hours wasn't much of a time difference, but it felt like 5 hours.
At least there was one good thing about it. Kick Ass. I mean, WOW! He was strong, donned in a tight wetsuit, and had that pathetic look in his eyes you went soft for in anyone. Every time you heard about another gangster or basic criminal who managed to get thrown in jail, you were tempted to do something just to get his attention. Was that a really good idea, though? Not really. Hell, committing a petty crime just to get a vigilante's attention? That wasn't really a good idea after you thought about it some more.
At least there was someone on your side. Kind of.
There were currently only 3 people you were friends with. Dave, Todd and Marty. If there were a competition in New York for the biggest nerds, you fully believed they would win 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Not particularly respectively, but it's possible. Whenever you caught up with them in Atomic Comics, you couldn't steer the conversation away from different superheroes and who would defeat whom. Real Batman vs Superman type of stuff. Well, you occasionally chimed in with a funny quip. Got a giggle out of Dave, made Marty snicker and Todd, a small smile. Idiots.
"So, this new group of vigilantes? Who's your favourite?" Todd asked the three of you. Marty seemed almost hesitant to answer. Blow up his own ego or give a random answer? Dave was almost confused before he remembered what Todd was blathering on about.
"Kick Ass. I know he's not technically part of that group, but he's always been my favourite, ever since I moved here anyway." You shrugged, figuring that Kick Ass would join that group eventually. It seemed inevitable. He didn't seem like the brooding emo alone type like Batman. More punk rock. Like Superman. Happy to work with others and always accepted help. His smile told you that anyway.
The more you thought about it, the more you saw resemblances of Kick Ass in Dave. The pathetic blue eyes, the sweet and friendly smile. Slightly built body, obviously due to more training. So, you got the boys' attention with a question, which seemed slightly out of the blue. "Do you think Kick Ass looks like Dave? Like, you see the resemblances, right?" Dave tensed, glancing over at you with a suddenly flushed face.
Oh. No.
"uhh..." Dave's mind went blank. What in the ever-loving fuck could he say to get himself out of this? It was definitely his Clark Kent/Superman issue. No glasses and a different outfit? Yeah, that's a different guy for sure. No fucking shot.
"Nope."
"...Not really."
He sighed silently in relief, shoulders sagging and a quick push of his glasses up his nose. "Yeah, no, I don't really see it. But I'm glad you think I'm as attractive as he is." He said way too quickly. But none of you gave it a second thought, brushing it off as Dave being his awkward, nerdy self. Which, in all honesty, was what he was around you 24/7. It was almost cute. Not as cute as Kick Ass though. God. You had to think of an idea to get his attention.
The current week was hell.
Your nagging feeling was growing as quick as any doubts you ever had about yourself. There had been a way to tell. Get Dave to fess up. He had to be Kick Ass! While he tried to mask his voice, it was just too obvious. How on earth could no one tell? Were they oblivious?!
Racking your brain for ideas, you eventually came up with something. Absolutely dire. And also wildly stupid. You sent Kick Ass an email.
You put in an address and signed off your name. Off it went to his site. Would he even appear? Probably not. He's a superhero. He wouldn't deal with suicides. Would he? No, he'd most likely call the police or something. Fuck it, you did it anyway. Consequences be damned! You needed to tell him. And your heart would beat harshly out of your chest the whole time. Like a stupid, loud drum in your ears with no way out of the beating. Oh, god.
This isn't your thing, but I have nowhere else to go.
Meet me here, 8pm. That's the only right time, no one will see me.
Why was time so slow? Every minute felt like an hour between when the email was sent and 8pm. The tiny seconds had no vocal cords, yet it sounded like every tick on your clock was shouting and screaming. Like it was your sign to pussy out of this idea and totally, completely forget about this whole thing. But the email was sent with moronic adrenaline rushing through your veins. Fully moronic.
Every hour alone felt like someone was breathing down your neck. Harshly. Like warm breaths that were a little too close, making your spine stick up from shivers that went down it. However, your parents weren't helping that case. They had the idea that you were actually going on a date at 8, rather than a fake suicide to confess your feelings to your best friend, who just so happened to be your favourite vigilante. Who is it? Just someone from school. Would we know them? No, not really. Be safe, okay? Obviously...
If that drumming in your heart was already loud, this was deafening. You couldn't even hear the cars going past on the street as you made your way to a rooftop.
"Hey..! Listen, I'm not sure why you emailed me, but listen to me, okay?" His voice was shaky and nervous, worried he would say the wrong thing somehow. You turned your head slightly, and in the darkness, Dave recognised you. He said your name under your breath. Thank god for the wind and rain.
"Kick Ass," You started with a sigh, stepping away from the ledge, turning to face him properly. Oh, those blue eyes. Like oceans you wanted to get lost in. "Listen, I-"
"I know you think there's no other way out, that no one cares but trust me... They do. People care. They love you, they adore you, you mean everything to everyone in your life, just... C'mere, please.. fully away from the edge.." he pleaded, arms out in some way to either bring you closer or to stop you from being stupid.
Before he could even continue, you called his name. "Dave." He froze up and stared at you with slightly wide eyes. It only made the glassy overcoat more shiny, like he was about to burst into tears or something. Which honestly would've made you feel worse for going ahead with this genuinely stupid plan. "I like you. Romantically. We both know we like eachother as friends. But, I want to be more than friends."
You got it out with a breath, closing your eyes as you felt your chest almost deflate with the exhale. He said your name and held his arms out again, prompting you into his chest. It made you smile and you took those few small steps into Dave, letting your arms start to wrap around the back of his neck.
But of course, he stopped you. He held your arms and then looked in your eyes as he pulled off the kick ass mask, both literally and figuratively. "I, I can't accept your feelings."
You know in those cartoons, when a character gets their heartbroken? Their heart literally breaks behind them as their eyes widen and sweat collects on their face? Yeah that was pretty much you. You felt like a cartoon character. Dave had only stopped your arms and brought you closer to stop you from actually jumping off the roof's edge when he rejected you. "I have a girlfriend. I have done for a while now, and,,, she's pretty cool." A little chuckle left him at the end of his sentence. Okay cocky.
The beating of a bell brass drum was back in your heart, unable to stop the way it was speeding like a drag race car. Eyes blurry, unfocused on the skin tight wetsuit in front of you. "Why haven't I seen her?" You didn't even register the words leaving your mouth until you were looking up at Dave.
The rain pattered on your head. Oh for fuck sake. Now? It had to start raining now? It got faster, harsher and your eyes screwed shut again as you swore you felt hail starting to bump your head. Dave answered your question anyway, seemingly uncaring for the rain right now. "You have." It was simple and to the point. You hated it. "Katie." Oh add her name for dramatic effect why don't you?
"why didn't you tell me?" You opened your eyes to look up at him again, watching the curls stick to his forehead. He looked like a wet dog, god, you still loved it, even if he was currently rejecting you and your confession.
"I, I didn't think it was relevant. I thought you would've seen us together in school or at Atomic Comics together. Like Erica and Marty."
"wow so you just left poor Todd alone? Fucking rude."
"hey! Don't, don't be like that."
"maybe I should just go ask him out instead. Make sure he isn't lonely." No you weren't. You weren't going to ask Todd out, you were sure you'd feelings for Dave ran too deep into the soil for you to do that.
But you walked away, you walked towards the door leading to the stairwell, now wanting to be out this rain. Your hand lingered on the door, hoping Dave would call your name out, kiss you in the rain and apologise.
This isn't a romcom.
There are no happy endings.
The rain made your back cold and shivery. So you slammed the door behind you, running down the steps so you could get home quicker. Dave watched you run across the street in the pouring rain, still stood on the roof. Maybe it was a mutual fuck up. He couldn't think straight with his curls dripping rain water. You loved him...
Atomic Comics was quieter. You sat at the little diner seats with your milkshake, earphones playing whatever loud music you could find. Mostly Metallica and Pantera. Flipping through a Batman comic with a bare interest in the few words on the page. With no friends next to you, a little sniffle in your nose, not so content with being alone... But also, not wanting to be around Dave, Todd and Marty. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe not. It really just depended on you.
You still loved him. Your stubborn heart in love.
