You had just moved to New York and you absolutely despised it. Being separated from all your friends and family was a different kind of heartache to deal with and you had to sweep it all under the rug for the sake of keeping your parents happy; your parents were already nervous and worried because of their new job that landed you all in this situation. To deal with high school's many flaws such as bullying, mean girls, fat-shaming and the stupidity of the high school social hierarchy, you drowned yourself in comic books. Reading about characters choosing to use their abilities for good and to make the world a better place helped to fill that lonely void that seemed destined for you to live in, until you met Dave Lizewski.
After a few months of living in New York, you decided to go to Atomic Comics instead of your regular local comic store because it happened to be closer to your house and why not try something new? You walked into the store and suddenly felt a pit in your stomach once you recognised people from your school in there. The outfit you chose to wear, a dark blue, long sleeve henley with a white lace cami underneath, bootcut jeans and your usual black converse felt so much tighter and heavier on your undulating figure but the feeling flew away upon seeing the comic book of your favourite character on a shelf. You walked over to it with a small smile on your face and when you tried to get it, your hand brushed his. Dave Lizewski from school? Why was he here and how did he somehow look more confused and embarassed as you? "You can have it." you mumbled, your voice barely audible as you glued your gaze to the ground, hoping he wouldn't recognise you, but it was impossible for him not to, you both had 3 classes together and he'd notice how those 'popular' girls always seemed to torment you at least once a week.
"Wait aren't you Y/N from school?" he asked, looking at you curiously and you simply nodded in response before lifting your head and finally looking at him. "I didn't know you liked comics, I probably would've spoken to you sooner." he murmured and you smiled to yourself upon hearing his words. There was a bit of silence before you asked him if he was gonna take the comic and he very much insisted on you taking it, to which you did. This ended up marking a somewhat unexpected friendship and the realization of the two of you being next door neighbours also expedited the process.
After several months of talking, going over to each other's houses and reading comics together, you couldn't help but wonder whether or not if you liked him. One time he defended you when Todd made fun of your weight, he bought variant covers of certain issues for you, he knew what kind of ice cream you liked, what comfort movies you watched whenever you were sad, how you always called your old friends from back home, what music you liked and that abundant pile of his knowledge of you made the butterflies in your stomach flutter faster and faster the more you thought about it. Holy shit you were in love with Dave Lizewski. The guy who eventually stopped sitting with Todd and Marty at lunch because you liked to eat and read in the library, the guy who held you while you cried when you got stood up at your first date and took you out to the movies the day after because your favourite movie was replaying in cinemas, the guy who let you talk about all your interests and didnt complain or interrupt you. Holy shit.
As you laid on your bed, staring at the ceiling in thought, wondering if Dave would like you, or if you had to be prettier or skinnier for that to ever happen. Then, two, out of place taps on your window snapped you out of your thoughts and you quickly got up, in your t-shirt that was 3 sizes too big and Cookie Monster sweatpants that were also 2 sizes too big, and lifted the curtain to see Dave sitting on the tree outside your window with the most stupid smile on his face. A playful sigh escaped your lips before quietly opening the window as to not alert your parents and he clumsily climbed into your room. "What happened?" you whisper. "There's a full moon tonight. Do you wanna go to the park and watch it?" he whispered in return. You think about it for a moment before nodding and throwing your sneakers on and climbing out the window. He let you climb out first so he could guide you down the tree before he climbs down and you walk to the park. Upon arrival, the two of you find a comfortable spot to sit under the shade (despite the fact the sun wasn't out) of a large tree.
"It's really beautiful, isn't it?" you ask, looking at the moon in front you. "Yeah, it is." he said, looking at you. You glance back at him, "Why were you looking at me?" you mumble. "Cause you're pretty." he responds. "No I'm not, don't say that." you say, and he asks the quietest 'why not?' after and your heart just melts. Suddenly, your faces are a lot closer than they've ever been before. Then he shyly says "Can I?" and your eyes widen before he leans in and your lips meet. Both of you break away after a bit, the kiss being sweet with a underlying hint of the mutual nervousness you shared. You rest your head on his shoulder and he leans his head on yours while the two of you stare at the moon. "I really think you're pretty so I am gonna call you pretty all the time and you can't do anything about it." he said, his voice muffled by your hair and you don't say anything, you only smile to yourself and move closer to him before falling asleep against his shoulder. For the first time in a long time, you no longer feel alone.
