One of the earliest lessons he’d learned in combat was that wounding an enemy was more effective than a kill.  A wounded soldier took one, maybe two others out of the fight as they tried to pull him back off the line, or patch him up.  At the very least, their priority often changed to defense of their fallen, rather than advancing.
