secondly i can say i that i've seen a statement of purpose with a grammatical error in it that was successful, so hopefully might not be the end of the world

Yeah, I’ve seen stories from people who had a lot of typos and still got accepted. So hopefully it’s not too bad, since it’s just one... Good luck on your application, too! Nice to see another JET applicant here :)
