[Okay, so I'm fairly positive you've already gone into extensive detail about Eilidh's and Cal relationship but: how does Eilidh express affection towards Cal or her family in general? Were her parents the kind who'd readily and often tell their children they're loved? Did/do they go out of their way to ensure they both know? Or are they the kind of people who normally express their affection and care through nonverbal means? Again, I'm sorry if you've already answered these questions. :3]

[I’ve definitely talked about Eilidh and Cal, because I love their relationship, but I haven’t talked quite so much about how they and their parents show affection :-D

One of my favorite stories about the Brady family is this one: the first night they were all at home after Cal was born, Eilidh (who was 4) went to his room to hold his hand because he was crying, and when their parents found them, they pulled out the couch and the whole family slept in the nursery that night. To use love language terminology, Eilidh has always been a physical touch/quality time person, and quality time is the love language the family has most in common. Being able to be near her family (including her non-related, chosen family) has been central to Eilidh’s decisions about her life; if it wasn’t, she might be living anywhere now, she might be even more advanced in her career, but she’s chosen to stay near home for now.

The fact that Cal lives in New York is hard on her–on all of them, but especially on Eilidh–but Cal’s primary love language, in addition to quality time, is words of affirmation. He’s always been very good at expressing his feelings in words, and he wants and needs to hear other people do the same, and so skype and phone calls are essential to his ability to live away from home. That does kind of clash with Eilidh–she’s much more of a nonverbal person and even went through a time when it was very hard for her to tell even her family members that she loved them–but she admires the hell out of her brother for the risks he takes and, so she puts up with only getting to hug him a couple times a year.

Because he’s more of a talker and more open about things, Cal is somebody Eilidh’s always been able to talk to about issues and feelings that she can’t articulate with other people. He’s helped her through a lot–sometimes unknowingly–just by being a safe place where she can say things she hasn’t worked out how to actually say yet. And for Cal, Eilidh is someone who helps him figure out how to look after himself, which is something he really needs. He’s so open with his feelings and affection that it’s easy for people to take advantage of him, and it’s in talking things through with Eilidh that he’s able to see people and situations with a little more… not quite cynicism but realism. Self-preservation. And the truth is, his ability to be emotionally open like that is partly the result of having her looking after him his whole life. It’s easier to take risks and be vulnerable when you know you’ll always have somebody loving you unconditionally and protecting you when you need it. 

Their parents aren’t as verbal about affection as you might expect writers to be. Peggy’s love language has always been gifts. She’s not extravagant, but her way of showing her kids love was to give them the things they needed to explore their passions: books, art supplies, trips to see plays, etc. I haven’t quite fleshed this out, but I think she grew up in a family where they didn’t have a lot of money to spare, and hobbies often weren’t in the budget. Poetry was one of the talents she could pursue without that material support, but she never wanted her kids to feel that any doors were closed to them. Now that they’re adults, she gives them other things: for Eilidh, it’s flowery, locally-made soaps and random cool things from antique stores that Peggy picks up on her trips around the country. For Cal, it’s more practical things like ordering him groceries when he’s between shows and low on money. It’s never about buying affection; that’s important. It’s just a way of saying I love you, and her kids understand that. Cal calls her to thank her and they talk for hours or Eilidh invites her over to help rearrange the living room around a curio that Peggy found for her, and they argue about tea vs coffee and end up going out for both. Gifts are a way to connect.

David is kind of a stereotypical dad in that his love language is acts of service. He fixes things, plants things, paints things, cooks things, etc, and he likes all those things best when he’s got one or more family members helping him out. Like Cal, he’s more verbal than Peggy and Eilidh, and he’s very good at listening and giving advice. He does that with Cal a LOT, because it’s not like he can fly to New York to fix a leaky shower head, but he can skype with Cal for an hour about do-it-yourself plumbing repairs and the state of the plaster in that tiny apartment. He tries to teach Eilidh as well, but she often doesn’t have the attention span for such non-creative things. She’s better at supervising (ie. hanging out and chatting while David does the actual work), which of course he loves, because like I said, the Brady family at its heart is all about spending time together, whatever the reason. Eilidh expresses A LOT just by being there. It’s a kind of affection both her parents understand and appreciate.]

[Peggy and David were very deliberate about instilling in their children both a work ethic and the ability to love and value things that aren’t necessarily profitable or practical. It was one of the things they did right: now they have two children who work in the arts and who love art but who aren’t afraid to put in the work to get where they want to be. Eilidh is more tenacious about her dreams than Cal is, though. She feels driven to chase things, where as he’s more content to be ready for the opportunities when they come.]

[Eilidh’s actually talked about the pet thing before! (link). But here are some related headcanons:

Cal was always the more tender-hearted of the two of them, and he was the one who was saddest about not being allowed to have a pet. Eilidh didn’t mind so much, but she used to hang out in the woods sometimes trying to charm forest creatures into being her friends. It might have worked for Cal if he’d tried it, but Eilidh didn’t have the patience to tame anything.

Eilidh doesn’t have a spirit animal. She doesn’t have a particularly strong connection with any animal, really; I associate her with birds a lot, which works metaphorically, but from her point of view they’re too fragile and dainty. She feels the same way about her fish, even though she loves the frilly little bastards. She respects cats; she complains about Ames’s Napoleon not liking her, but she secretly likes him for being hard to please. But she isn’t particularly drawn to animals the way some people are.

Eilidh’s dad actually would have loved to have some livestock and a small farm instead of being a grocer, but his allergies made it impossible. Still, he reads a lot of books about farming, which translated into Eilidh reading a lot of books about farming, because they were around the house and they weren’t poetry :-p]

Did you have any pets growing up?

“Just a little brother.” *laughs* “Nah, Dad’s allergic, so we never did. We’d catch frogs and things and try to keep them in jars, but they didnae do so well, and Cal would always make me take them back outside if they were lookin’ sad.”

What is one of your favorite memories with your parents and Cal?

“When my parents first brought Cal home from the hospital, I was four, and they were worried I would be upset about him gettin’ so much attention. I know, you’re fuckin’ shocked.” *laughs* “Anyway, they didnae need to worry. That first night, Ma and Dad heard Cal start to cry, then he stopped all of a sudden, so Dad went to check on him. There wasnae anythin’ wrong, though--I was in there, holdin’ Cal’s hand through the bars of the crib. That’s why he’d stopped cryin’. I didnae want my baby brother to sleep alone, so I’d dragged my blankets and pillows and stuffed animals into the nursery and set up a bed for myself on the sofa so I could be there if he needed me.

Instead of scoldin’ me or sendin’ me back to bed, Dad pulled out the sofa bed, and he and Ma and I all spent Cal’s first night home together in the nursery. It’s one of my earliest memories.”
