David Hedges - Guest Lecture
David Hedges is a photojournalist who works primarily for South West News. Only in recent years did he graduate from Plymouth university with a Ba hons degree in photography. He knew he was interested in reportage, and as one of his final projects he ambitiously set of to document Romanian gypsies. He talked us through his roller working as a photojournalist, and not knowing what his day is going to entail. He will be contacted with the offer of a story and then head of to get the story. He told the stories of the courtroom scrums and the friendships and rivalries with fellow photojournalists. He became most well known for documenting the struggle of Tony Nicklinson, a man with locked in syndrome, who campaigned for the right to end his own life. Hedges talked about having to separate yourself from the situation in times like this.
In this incredible video, David Hedges has documented Britian's longest serving Blacksmith, Hardy Fred Hariss. Hardy is 84 years old and says he first entered the world of blacksmithing when he was only 10 years old.
Being a team of folks who love handi-work, his genuine love for his craft inspires us. Hardy adds, after suffering from various medical ailments, he considers his work to be the best kind of therapy, vowing to never, ever, retire.
