Mugshot Monday - “David Menk” coffee mug with Birchwood Blend by Peace Coffee
My friend Melanie said last week, “I have this uber funky cup I got at the pottery festival. You should use it some Monday!”
She brought the mug in and I honestly can’t stop looking at it. The piece is wheel-thrown but trimmed into and octagon. Then there are rough horizontal “shelves” on the sides – I thought they were just for decoration, but my fingers fit perfectly around them and help hold the cup.
And the glaze – I have no idea what is going on with the glaze, but it’s beautiful and mesmerizing. I love this mug.
The piece is by David Menk who is currently a studio artist at Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis. From what I gather from his Instagram, it sounds like he is just getting back into throwing. I look forward to seeing more of his new work. So inspiring!
Thanks to Melanie for lending me your mug! Sidnote: Melanie is a potter and has been helping me figure out what ceramics classes I should take at Powderhorn and Northern Clay. I haven’t thrown since college and am excited to try it out again!
