David Munrow, the mad english pixie who single-handedly introduced mediaeval and renaissance music to a twentieth century audience back in the 60s and 70s, put together a soundtrack to go with a documentary film about the belgian cyclist, Eddy Merckx
and this piece off that album fills us with so much joy it's hard to explain - he's playing on a chalemeau, the renaissance predecessor to the clarinet, which only had one octave and sounds a lot brighter than a modern clarinet - but this is such a happy dance tune, and does evoke pelting up and down french hills on a bicycle, to us at least
this guy - his enthusiasm was so infectious, he certainly managed to infect us with a love for both his music and him, when we were 9 and very randomly saw him perform in a swedish church one summer
