Three of the artists behind different “Harry Potter” editions discuss their process and how they took on illustrating the magical world at a special panel celebrating 20 years of the series in the United States at San Diego Comic-Con 2018.

Typography Tuesday

When trying to express the ongoing influence of the fine-press movement on contemporary publishing to my History of Books and Printing class, I often use the example of publications in the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling with illustrations by Mary GrandPré, in this case Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the first American edition published in New York by Arthur A. Levine Books in July 2003. I tell them the story of how I was assigned the family duty of waiting at our local bookstore until midnight to pick up our pre-ordered, first-edition release of the latest HP title for my children, who were of course at home snug in their beds. I had not personally read any titles in the series, so when I began to absently page through the book for the first time at the bookstore, I was just stunned. Look at those headers and page numbers! Look at those chapter openings! Look at that text face!!

I had to find out what these typefaces were and who designed them, so as a type- and book-history nerd, I instinctively turned to the back page in search of the colophon, and Lo and Behold! there it was in all its diamond-shaped typographic glory, just as it has been since William Morris reintroduced it, along with proprietary type, at his Kelmscott Press, through the second wave of British and American fine presses, through major publishers like Houghton Mifflin, Knopf, New Directions, and Random House, right down to Levine Books, an imprint of Scholastic Press! Whew!!

And here I learned that the text face is 11.5-pt Adobe Garamond -- of course it is! -- redrawn by Robert Slimbach in 1989, and typeset by Brad Walrod. It also tells me that the art director was David Saylor, the managing editor was Manuela Soares, the manufacturing director was Angela Biola, and that the edition was printed and bound at Quebecor World Martinsburg in Martinsburg, West Virginia. Whew, again! Thank you, Mr. Morris.

Why this extensive colophon left out the other types used, I don’t know, but I later learned that the chapter heads, opening initials, running titles, and page numbers are in Able, a font designed by Marcus Burlile in 1997, and that the text also makes use of a slew of other typefaces, including Shipwreak Bold, Frankfurter Inline, Flemish Script, Brimley, Dollhouse, and P22 Da Vinci Forward. Yikes!

The Harry Potter Series is truly a typographic adventure!
