"Ladybug Girl" is an artless, charmless book of no literary merit for children or anyone else. Has anyone noticed how popular ladybugs have become in children's apparel and decor? I believe the author of this book knew it would sell for that reason, and wrote this story of a little girl dressed in ladybug clothing, filling it with heavy-handed efforts to show that this little girl was unconstrained by outdated role models for girls. That wouldn't necessarily be a negative if this book had any grace, lyricism or delight in it. It does not. It's probably the worst children's book I have ever read, though usually I choose more carefully. I, too, was quickly taken in by the ladybug theme. Quite the little moneymaker, I expect. Unfortunately I did not read this book in time to return it, or I would have out of sheer disgust.
