On my drive to work on Sunday Folk Alley was on the radio. There was a short excerpt from a Podcast--Basic Folk--where Cindy Howes interviews David Wilcox. The excerpt begins about the 34:00 minute mark. Howes points out that in the 1980s Wilcox gained a good measure of fame and didn't handle it well. She then asked how he manages not to get swept away, but still have the confidence to perform?

I was intrigued that Wilcox doesn't respond by talking about fame, but rather how there's an aura of bliss involved in live performance of music and that an artist can ride that wave to great heights. But the feeling of bliss ends quickly so the fall from from the heights can be dangerous.

I'm paraphrasing both Howes' question and Wilcox's answer. But I think Wilcox is talking about what D'Angelo calls "his ministry." The conversation shifts my perspective about the the difficulties performers face ; or that fame isn't quite what it's cracked up to be.
