how did David break his back?

Hello, kind Anon,

David Tennant had a prolapsed disc and had to have spinal surgery in 2008 to remove the pieces/leaked spinal gunk.  It happened after his Hamlet had transferred from Stratford Upon Avon to London, and he had to miss his London Press Night (and many subsequent performances) due to the injury & recovery time from the surgery.

It now makes me cringe whenever he talks about his back hurting whilst being harnessed up for stunts in Doctor Who, because it was all leading up to this.  His Hamlet was quite the active bloke (and there were sword fights and tussles with other actors wherein he was manhandled a bit) - so ultimately his back reached a point where he couldn’t continue and he was in a lot of pain. 

Luckily the surgery went well, he recovered, and was even able to return to Hamlet for its final week in London (and return to Doctor Who to film his final 4 specials).  He discussed the surgery on Jo Whiley’s radio show in 2009, and even brought the bits of stuff they’d removed from his spine (photos below).
