David Gold, along with David Sullivan and Karren Brady, has been a very unpopular figure at West Ham United. It’s safe to say the relationship between the fans and board has been fractious – supporters are currently planning a televised black balloon protest against them while one fan was recently banned for wearing a ‘GSB OUT’ shirt when they were a flag bearer. This comes with the club currently sitting in the relegation zone, ahead of a tough seven-game run of fixtures where they face many of the Premier League’s top sides. It’s currently looking very bleak for them, but fans won’t have been looking to their owners for words of comfort, due to the lack of trust they have in them. WATCH WEST HAM UNITED VIDEOS WITH STREAMFOOTBALL.TV BELOW However, they will also have been hoping to avoid comments that would anger them further, though Gold has produced exactly that. The first part that has enraged fans is the fact that he’s been quoted by Sky Sports as saying: “I know exactly what Ed’s experienced. I’ve experienced it four or five times myself”. This comes after Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward had flares thrown over his property’s front fence by hooded fans. This led to West Ham supporters aiming criticism at Gold, as well as the rest of the hierarchy. Hope so….sooner they are gone the better. Toxic atmosphere will stay until they are gone. — Adam (@IamChadbacca) February 7, 2020 I’m now at a point just hearing @davidgold @karren_brady and Sullivan names mentioned just winds me up the 3 of you HAVE NOT west ham’s best INTEREST at heart and WE no longer want you HERE your just poison to us — kelvin page (@cabbiekelv) February 7, 2020 David Gold’s increasingly lost the plot, he’s irrational. How are fans meant to take seriously someone who’s clearly so cut off from reality. Suggesting there’s no more than a couple of hundred protesters and most people love the stadium is delusional. He needs help — MartinW (@MoonspangleW) February 7, 2020 Play the victim to the press. As far as I’m aware this has all been done passively and above board. People who lie do tend to play the victim to justify their porkys. — Huffam (@danny93148914) February 7, 2020 In addition, he was quoted by The Mirror as saying: “I’ve not received a penny in salary or expenses from West Ham in 10 years. I know of owners or chief executives that are earning £3million a year… and more.” As Sam Inkersole points out, he has made £18.6m back on interest from the loan that he provided the club, which many would argue makes up for the lack of a salary – and some. David Gold here, really not helping himself whatsoever. £18.6m interest on a £45m loan isn’t shabby. https://t.co/uIBt46T4uY — Sam Inkersole (@Sam_InkersoleTM) February 7, 2020 Just to add salt to any West Ham wounds, he came out with an outrageous statement, comparing the club’s current fortunes to his childhood: “When I was a boy as a fan, all I remember is a football club in the old second division, all my young life it was in the old second division. IS LIFE UNDER GOLD AND SULLIVAN REALLY THAT BAD? MAYBE THIS QUIZ WILL CHANGE YOUR MINDS, WEST HAM FANS… “At least it’s in the Premier League now. OK, we’ve got a few problems now, but overall we’re moving upwards.” With all of the above in mind, it’s safe to say that fans were far from pleased with him. Did he also try to claim that he legally had to charge interest? Shame he didn’t tell the other PL boards who had shareholder loans. Seats as close to the pitch as the Boleyn, take local businesses to the LS. If their lips move they are probably not being entirely honest. #GSBOUT — Andy Myson (@andymyson1703) February 7, 2020 Sam their reign is coming to an end, they know it and are getting desperate.more lies will be exposed, further digging into the running of the Club needs to be done.this is just the tip of the iceberg I’m thinking. — John Quigley (@h_hammer72) February 7, 2020 He is right, he hasn’t taken a salary. Just the £18.6m in interest loans. Hardly the same. And he hasn’t lied, he just put some words together that proved not to make any sense. “What are we, 20yrs from the pitch here? If the seats are any further away WE WONT BE MOVING” — John Mcewan (@poplarjohn) February 7, 2020 You wonder whether they truly believe the nonsense they continually spout. The game is up for them. Too many fires to fight & the only solution for them is to do what they did at Brum & that’s sell up. 2 sets of fans despising them for the way they’ve run both clubs. Says it all — William Field (@wilfield71) February 7, 2020 Meanwhile, West Ham fans have been reacting to reports of a potential takeover. #DavidGold #WestHamUnited #EdWoodward
