“THIS IS A SACRED PLACE”
by Lebo
Born to Cuban immigrant parents and raised in South Florida, David Le Batard, aka Lebo, works across a wide variety of creative mediums and has become one of Miami’s cadre of highly sought-after muralists. A self-described “innovator of Postmodern Cartoon Expressionism” he describes cartooning as a primordial form of expression and says even the hard-edged yet organic work of Picasso after 1905 embodies the very essence of cartooning. Only blocks from one of the nation’s most vibrant arts districts the fact that Wynwood’s Jose de Diego Middle School had seen all arts programming de-funded years before was deeply disturbing to many. When a new school principal and a community activist decided to correct the situation the inaugural Re-Imagining the Arts in Wynwood (RAW) Project was born in 2014, and Lebo joined the more than three dozen artists who stepped up that first year to support arts education in Wynwood. @leboart @therawproject_
