Julien  is  a  difficult  travelling  companion,  but  he  isn't  the  only  one.  Hardly  special  given  the  rest  of  their  company;  just  another  noble  and  another  withdrawn  person.  Everyone  here  is  a  tadpole  infected  being,  all  reaching  a  common  goal  requires  tolerance  and  honesty.  Two  traits  that  the  knight  seems  to  test  often,  especially  now  given  the  withheld  information  of  a  curse.  Unbeknownst  to  either,  it's  something  they  share.  An  adamant  and  defensive  stance  is  taken  immediately ᅳ that  look  in  his  eye  being  used  to  intimidate.

there   was   a   light,   repetitive   push   on   julien's   arm,   and   a   tiny   whine   near   his   ear.   when   he   opened   his   eyes,   he'd   find   that   a   fox   had   crawled   into   his   bed.   pin   had   traces   of   dirt   in   his   fur   and   a   leaf   behind   his   ear,   evidently   from   an   adventure   outside.   one   might   think   he   was   concerned   for   his   owner,   but   no   —   the   exhausted   wizard   was   still   sitting   in   the   corner,   lost   in   a   much-needed   trance.   perhaps   that   was   the   reason   the   fox   had   deemed   julien   an   acceptable   target,   but   not   occtis.

but   his   distress   was   clear,   his   whines   quiet   but   persistent.   his   little,   purple   scarf   was   missing.   pin   continued   to   prod   at   julien's   shoulder   with   his   forepaws.   get.   up.   need.   help.

azune slightly raised an eyebrow, having already noted julien’s past reactions to his presence. “we’re working together.” for the magpies but julien knew that. and that wasn’t what he was asking. “we were sleeping together for a time, when you were at the barrowguard. but it’s been over a year since that.” now he tilted his head and the barest hint of a smirk appeared on his face. “are you jealous?”

THERE IS STILL TIME BEFORE GUESTS START POPULATING THE ARCANAUDE'S HALLS. there's a list of things he needs to go through like briefing his marshals and coordinating with varen. but it's another pair that draws his attention. there's something about them on his list too, but that is not the reason he's drawn like a moth to a flame.

in his hands are two spell glyphs, and for a brief moment they weigh as much as they did when standing in the upper floor of the seven stars. he holds out the first one towards @frcmscratch. “ this one should fend off an attack, if something goes wrong. ” murray made that one, while the second holds a much more recent spell he discovered in front of a mirror.

“ this— ” and he holds the second glyph towards @davin0s. “ can physically alter your appearance and voice for an hour. it's not an illusion someone can see through. ” none of them want to bring attention to julien's return yet. and this was the best azune could come up with.

this was the familiar part; the contingency plans laid out beforehand, trying to prepare for everything that might go wrong in the evening. it's the personal that sends him spinning, like hal's generous offer prior.

maybe in another life, he'd stand here as their date. maybe he might've worked security. but he wouldn't try to balance a carefully crafted web of lies. “ do you— is there anything you wish to discuss before guests arrive? ”

it   looked   like   his   conversation   with   v.aelus   had   been   overheard.   she'd   been   telling   him   how   to   survive   losing   people   within   a   long   lifespan,   how   it   was   important   not   to   think   you   own   anything   or   anyone.   then,   it   was   easier   to   give   them   back.   all   of   this   said   while   he   was   clutching   a   dead   fox   to   his   chest.

it   made   sense.   he   knew   that   was   how   he   should   think.   but   it   didn't   feel   good   at   all.   he   wasn't   like   v.aelus,   he   wasn't   an   elf   with   this   preset   longevity.   he   was   never   meant   to   be   animate   as   long   as   he   might   be   now.   o.cctis   had   never   let   go   of   anything   in   his   life,   but   perhaps   that   was   because   he   hadn't   gotten   to   grasp   it   in   the   first   place.

“    right,   right,   i   know,    ”        he   said,   looking   away,        “    my   family   will   come   for   me   and   you   want   to   kill   them,   and   you   don't   know   what   they'll   use   me   for,   so   i   can't   leave   your   sight.    ”        it   was   a   tired   recitation   of   the   knight's repeated sentiments.   sometimes   he   was   haunted   by   the   wording   of   that   original   vow,   by   what   it   could've   meant   instead   of   what   it   did.   he'd   all   but   begged   j.ulien   to   say   he   cared   before   going   back   into   o.brimus.

there   was   a   sort   of   buzzing   in   his   head.   he   knew   he   wasn't   thinking   clearly,   but   he   refused   to   stop leaning into   it.   if   he   did,   this   would   never   happen.   the   same   patterns   would   keep   repeating   over   and   over,   getting   worse   and   worse.

there   was   a   lot   of   bustling   about   when   the   group   was   travelling   —   splitting   apart   to   run   errands   when   they   could.   he'd   told   the   others   he   was   stopping   by   a   paper   shop   nearby,   close   enough   to   not   raise   alarm.   he'd   donned   an   arcane   disguise   and   made   his   way   down   the   street.

faster   and   faster,   further   and   further.   he   didn't   have   a   pulse,   but   it still felt like his adrenaline was up.   he   was   going   to   get   in   trouble.   he   needed   to   collect   himself,   to   decide   where   he   was   going.   occtis   ducked   into   an   alley   he   assumed   was   empty.   turns   out,   it   was   full   of   knight.

“    oh,    ”        he   said,   in   occtis'   voice.   the   tall,   mustachioed   man   coughed   a   lot.   his   voice   changed,   sounding   somehow   nerdier   than   occtis'   own   and   with   an   accent   that'd   be   at   home   with   the   einfasen.        “    oh.   hallo.   pardon   me,   i   did   not   know   the   space   was   occupied.   i'll   just   be   going.    ”        he   started   to   back   up.

Well,  who  is  she  to  deny  a  threatening  request?
