*cough* musketeers bake off AU *cough*
Oh, you star.
The four boys are contestant bakers, Athos is the resident reserved one, the one that hopes for the counter at the back and gives monosyllabic answers whenever the judges wander past. If it weren’t for his absolute precision when it came to baking, people would hate him, but he’s too skilled for that. He was French-trained (such a scandal, and that’s before he starts copping off with Porthos and flour handprints start showing up on arses) and always, always puts a Parisian twist on things. His bakes come with a glass of wine and an unimpressed look when someone calls him on a mistake.
Aramis flirts with the camera, with the bakers, with the judges, with his bread. He chatters constantly, encouraging his oven to stay hot, his dough to stay risen, his ice cream not to melt. He tells stories about his mother and sisters, laughs at their antics - they’re his harshest critics and he adores them. Aramis’ bakes are bright and colourful, rich and sweet and often overpowering, his mistakes lie in adding too much. Too much flavouring, too much fruit, too much icing, but he shrugs and smiles and does it again next week - he knows what he (and the two flour-handed bakers) like.
D’Artagnan ducks his head and smiles when the camera’s on him, he shyly explains what he’s making, he sneaks peeks at the other counters to check he’s doing it right. D’Art brings his own eggs and milk, his parents send him produce from the farm, his neighbours send flour, his is a home grown, family bake. It’s not overly adventurous but it’s proven (in the drawer), he nibbles his lip when the judging is happening, he always congratulates everyone else, and his temper flares when something goes wrong - bin incidents are often.
Porthos is the one that you think can’t handle the fiddliness of spun sugar or a baked Alaska and yet he’s the best of the bunch. Porthos’ showstoppers stop the show, he makes his own stands and his own equipment (specially hollowed boxes for perfectly square shortbread and an assortment of tools that he brought from home, all things he had to make himself when buying a new set of pans wasn’t feasible). Porthos grins at the camera when it passes, he helps his neighbours when they’re struggling, he’ll share half his icing if it means someone else will have something to show. Porthos uses spices and fruit he’s never used before but his palette is learning, he dips his fingers in pots and proclaims he’s adding “this fuck off expensive saffron” to the cherries - it nearly always turns out wonderful, and when it doesn’t, he remembers, and he learns.
Constance’s creations come out technically perfect but lacking in creativity, her meringues are crisp on the outside and crumbly on the inside, her swiss rolls are in neat circles, her fruit is never sunk at the bottom, but she stresses over tiny details and gets dough in her hair. Constance’s “tear and share” are always the best, she keeps a careful eye on everyone else in the room, especially one little firestarter who she manages to save once or twice with a quick swap of dough.
Treville is the judge everyone loves, he talks about layers and soggy bottoms and winks at the camera. The bakes he chooses are classics, cakes for tea on Sunday, bakewell tarts and spotted dick (cue wink). Treville teaches by encouragement, he’s gentle and kind and nudges bakers in the right direction if they’re tarrying in the oven too long. Treville adores his job and his constant smile shows it.
Richelieu is the judge everyone (loves to) hate, he prowls around the benches and makes seemingly idle comments that never fail to make a baker worry. “It’s very easy to overpower on the cinnamon.” (cue bakers adding half the cinnamon and it being totally underflavoured, Richelieu smirks.) Richelieu’s choice of bake is exotic, recipes from around the world, especially things he hopes the bakers don’t know so he can watch them flail. He will reluctantly (and accidentally) choose a favourite, and whilst he can be harsher on them, he’s also ridiculously pleased when they do well, and Athos could really fucking do without it.
Flea and Ninon are the presenters, they frolic on the grounds and make up silly innuendos for the cameras. They run around the tent and steal bowls before they can be washed, they flick icing at each other and giggle. (So… Mel and Sue.)
The viewers’ favourite is Porthos, his easy charm and warm laugh are enough to endear him to everyone even without his ridiculously delicate creations that nab him Star Baker most weeks. He wins by a landslide, but they’ve all forgotten it was a competition anyway. Who cares when there’s friendship and cake to be had?

I am sorry you are feeling low right now & as a fellow anxiety sufferer I am well aware of how suffocating it can be. I too was in a similar position 20 years ago, so can totally relate to everything you listed. so If you need a rant, I am here.
<3 <3 thank you so much friend. the real upside of my blah anxietyblogging is finding people who tell me they’ve been there--it just, makes me feel so much better to know i’m not alone in this.

I did that AO3 tag thingy and got "unsafe campfire nipple play" if you can turn that into a prompt then you are a god :)
I was singing to Disney songs and choked laughing when I saw this, completely inappropriate but entirely hilarious. I will try my damnedest to get it in somewhere; I do have a camping fic that’s been tinkered with for some months now, it would fit nicely into that!
