          it wasn’t that grace wasn’t thankful someone was throwing a memorial for their family—they didn’t have the means to do so right now anyway. grace felt like this was forced, there was something off about the situation and they didn’t like it. if grace didn’t want to be here, then she couldn’t imagine anyone else wanted to be here either. while grace had friends, it seemed like the people that she talked to didn’t understand the loss that she’d gone through. they didn’t want people to go through what they were going through now, but at some point, they didn’t really know what else to do or say to make people understand that her grief was normal. what grace didn’t want, was a bunch of people who had barely ever spoken a word to her before, coming up and saying how sorry they were. they wanted answers. still, they had a part to play. “thank you so much for coming.”

Mostly, Edith knew Narcissa because Georgie knew Narcissa. But she trusted Georgie’s tastes and she was hardly going to pass up an opportunity to see all her friends from the castle. So she got glammed and glittered up, bought the most expensive puzzle box she could find. She figured she would run into the birthday girl eventually. For now, she’d have fun.

“yep, still free,” she answered, nodding her head, “although tips are always appreciated.” she pulled on her bright smile, mina beaming over the bar top at the person before her, forgetting the other guests mingling around for the time being. it was kind of quiet around the bar just then, it seemed most people who wanted them already had drinks, and she had nothing but time. “so what can i get you, then?”

the waves can be heard lapping at not so distant sands as a lone violin plays in the rest of an orchestra without players. and with those first few notes the couples take to the floor. beautiful ladies dressed in white on the arms of gentlemen in black dress robes sweep across the floor, their every turn watched under the hawk-like gazes of dozens of mothers and fathers and aunts and uncles and siblings and cousins.

a staple of wixen society's busy summers for nearing in on three centuries, surviving war and scandal, affairs and political intrigue, the black family's debutante ball, held at the families devon summer estate, is not only an important party for those looking to network, but a symbol of status for all who receive a coveted invitation.

tradition is the foundation of all for those who enter the ballroom, and what was branded as glorified way to cement beneficial matches for only those with the finest blood has not strayed far from it's roots — except now the matches are made between dances, the finest champagne easing the way for intricate politics and favours exchanged, and for a lucky few who are in attendance who escape the ballroom battleground; betrothals already set are announced.

the memorial takes place on the evening of july 23rd, 1977 in character.

while the ball has always been a mixture of pomp and circumstance and political intrigue, details as to who started the cauldron lock-in have been lost to time and copious amounts of alcohol — some recall a disgruntled member of halfblood society whose invite never arrived, others simply a man intent on lifting the spirits of those around him. either way it was one hundred years ago this very night that the doors of the pub swung shut with the wave of a rogue wix's wand, a night of revelry all of their own ahead. and every year since it has been repeated, at first by copycats much to the chagrin of those that ran the cauldron, but now official and supported with the centenary set to be the biggest night yet.

so come one, come all, and celebrate nothing in particular and everything at once while those who deem themselves above you prance in lavish ballrooms — you're sure to have a much better time!

a lock-in in name only, guests have some roam of the rest of the alley but most retail shops are closed, instead running stalls in the back courtyard and surrounding street.
