Finnpoe Quarantine Series: Day Sixty-Five
Day Sixty-Four l Day Sixty-Six
“You’re staying,” Poe mumbles against Finn’s lips, and the other man smiles. The affirmation has become his mantra over the last day, first joyfully exclaimed, and now Poe will say it, grinning before he pulls Finn against him and rewards him with a kiss.
“I’m staying,” Finn agrees, and Poe hums to himself happily.
Perhaps it’s selfish, the pilot admits. “I never wanted you to leave,” Poe says bluntly, pausing to take Finn in. They stare at each other, gauging the other’s reaction, then Finn shakes his head.
“I didn’t want to leave you.” His brown eyes shine. “You’re too important.” He inclines his head. “The Resistance is too important.”
Poe laughs loudly; it’s a wonderful sound that reverberates around the room. He grabs Finn hand, kissing his knuckles, and smirks at his partner.
“I thought you were sticking around just for me.”
Finn raises an eyebrow. “Whatever helps you sleep at night, Flyboy.”
“You do,” Poe’s brow furrows. “You really do, Finn.”
Finn’s heart skips a beat, the corners of his mouth quirking upwards. BB-8 invites them to find a private room, but Finn and Poe have eyes only for each other.
Day Sixty-Five
I taught one of my coolest lessons today- the one about conditions that promote armed violence- and it went really well in both classes. I’m very pleased about that. Book Paper drafting went pretty well, too; students really buckled down, focused, and got some substantial writing done.
The students in my second block class, who are pretty good at talking and writing at the same time, had an interesting conversation about the impact of going remote last spring. It started because one of the boys accidentally typed a word in Spanish and said, “Oh, but you could read it if I wrote my paper in Spanish, right, Miss M?” Then one of the girls asked me if I was fluent (no, but I can hold a conversation), and said she was worried about going into Spanish II next semester because it had been so long since she’d been in a Spanish class. A few other students chimed in, and expressed how hard their foreign language classes had been in the remote format. They said they’d mostly given up. One added that he knew he didn’t know as much as he was “supposed to” in French, another told me he felt that way about all his classes, and the rest agreed. I said- with the preface that it’s not an insult- that it was obvious to me that they hadn’t practiced certain skills as much as they would have if they’d been in classrooms until June, but that I doubted it would put them at a permanent disadvantage.
I told them not to worry about being “behind” or not knowing what they’re “supposed to” know because they’re all in the same boat, and we know that, we know what we need to do to teach them. I added that they’ve got four years here; that’s plenty of time for them to learn whatever they need to learn to be ready for the world once they graduate. I hope they take that to heart.
Day Sixty-Five
I didn’t get to write this entry sooner because I had to drive to my dad’s house after work today, but hi! Here I am! Happy break to everyone who’s got tomorrow off, too, and condolences to those of you who don’t.
Today was one of those days that was pretty chill in my world, but definitely not in other people’s worlds. Like, the SRO did not have a chill day. The Principal did not have a chill day. I don’t know what happened, but I know they were very busy with whatever it was. Meantime, I was in my Cavern of Learning with Mrs. T, editing rough drafts of Epic Book Papers. It was a very quiet cavern today- so much so that when Ms. N walked in, she asked what had happened! In fact, two things: rough drafts were due today (so some students were feeling the time crunch), and I’d pointed out that striking up conversations just because they’d been told not to wasn’t original, edgy, or impressive. I honestly wasn’t expecting that to be as effective as it was, but I’m not going to complain!
I spent a good chunk of time helping one of our highest needs students with her writing. She hasn’t mastered paragraph-building yet, so I just kept asking her questions and having her write down her answers until she had an appropriate amount of information on one of her book’s themes. Then I had her “enter key and tab” (the phrase many students, not just her, are more likely to know than “start a new paragraph”) and started the process over again. It was slow going, and we took lots of breaks so she wouldn’t get overwhelmed, but a full draft appeared one sentence at a time. Ultimately, when she saw that she had two pages of writing, she looked a bit awed. I’m counting that as a big win.
The class’ attention held, really, until about the last ten minutes before Block 4 ended. After that, it was all giggles, silly noises, practicing basketball moves with crumpled paper, and other shenanigans. Mrs. T and I ended up just laughing and letting it happen. The students did so well for the majority of the day, so it’s all good.
After school, the MfoL kids and I went to one of the hotels nearby to decorate a Christmas tree for an auction put on by a local charitable organization. There were students from other clubs there, too, so we were jokingly scoping out each other’s work, which was pretty funny. Each tree had to have a theme, so we decorated ours with ornaments in our school colors, and draped it with ribbons in the “cause colors” for mental health awareness, domestic violence prevention, and gun violence prevention. The club’s president, who is also one of our tallest members, put the star on the tree, we plugged the lights in, and it was perfect.
