Day 8 - Mt. Rushmore
Today we started around 9am. Met a Harley guy outside of the hotel. He was from Idaho and seemed to be really into motorcycles. Has bunch of bikes, and there's aways something going on in his garage. Started after a little chitchat. Headed north on I-25 and then US85 towards La Grange. Of course I forgot something. Gas! The next available gas on the route was obviously out of range. Had to turn around and head back. Yup, slow start for the day! Took internal roads to cross into Nebraska. Well, farms everywhere. Flat lands. So much of contrast from Colorado. The roads seemed a little uninteresting to me after a while. Couldn't see a decent place to stop for a long time. Finally took a break on the side of the road. We crossed a somewhat bigger town of Scottsbluff. It was just about time when you start to feel hungry. But not hungry enough. So we continued up north. The landscape was interesting over there. Small hilly area, no farming but grasslands. You could see cattle herds at a distance. Like most internal roads, it was an undivided two way road. Hardly any traffic either way. I was easily doing 70-80mph. We could see black clouds at a distance. Enough of rain already! Kuntal was enjoying the ride and the change of scenery. Her comment was - shouldn't this be the loneliest road of America? Just about that time, we crossed 2 cowboys herding their cattle. Looks like they were taking all of them across the road. Should have stopped to say hi and take some pictures. A little later I was getting hungry/ tired. That feeling of regret was kicking in. Should probably have had lunch back in the town we just crossed. We reached a junction where we had to decide which way to go. Almost equal distance for the destination but no idea where a decent place to eat would be. Googled, yelled etc and decided to go via Crawford. About 30 mins and we reached the small town. It was a very old town. Almost like a ghost town. Mid west, yes. Wide roads yet practically no one around. The walls, paint, practically everything was falling apart. Kuntal asked me, do people shoot here like in Movies? I laughed. Saw the restaurant we were looking for. Tailgate Bar & Grill. That was probably the only place that looked recently built or remodeled from outside. We drove around the block to see the place. There was probably everything you would need in a small town. But all those stores were so jaded. Just the way you would see in a classic mid-west movie. We were hesitant to go in. We were the odd ones from every which way one could imagine. Opened the door, one step inside. A dull bar/ grill place. No one to seat you. There was room for us to wait to be seated. Well, may be we should wait? Meanwhile 4 tables were watching us. Probably thinking what on earth are these clowns dressed in weird stuff doing here. Every one was old too. All of them watching us. It felt more like staring at us. Making us so nervous. Where is the waitress? Should we just go sit someplace? The only waitress I see is the girl behind the bar, facing the other way, busy at the register. Almost a minute later she turns around, gives us a similar weird look and then says, you can sit anywhere you like. Now that we got ourselves a table, we are waiting for something else. Is she going to come and take order or is there some other protocol? Yeah i know. We were feeling unwelcomed so we were doubting everything. She finally gets our order. Nothing veg except for salad and some appetizers. Now that we got settled in, Kuntal wanted to go to restroom. She went in but came back in a minute. She couldn't figure out where the light switch was. Asked the waitress, it turned out to be a pull down switch. Even the men's restroom had a very old paper dispenser made in Wisconsin. Ate some salad and appetizers, paid cash and we were out. Went around the block again for some pictures and then we we resumed on to our way. We stopped at a gas station to fill up. Our rule is that Kuntal gets down and pays for the gas and then I fill up while sitting on the bike while keeping the bike straight. That way we can get as much gas in the tank as possible. Just when we were about done, a couple jump in front of us. Says - I saw your bmw and had to come and say hi! He was from Dallas and has a K1200. Exchanged a few more words and I was about ready for a good conversation. Don't know what clicked in him, he suddenly said nice meeting you and left. Weird!! Once we hit the highway again, I kinda liked the rest of the way. Good greenery, lots of motorcycles on the way, straight roads, winding up a bit on small hills. Lots of bugs though, lots. We finally took the inner road to Keystone. Slow winding roads and we finally reached the town. The monument was a little further ahead. We decided we will go visit the monument and then come back and eat. It was 4 something. When we reached up, we saw the carving at the Mt Rushmore and my first reaction was - that's it? I thought it was much bigger! Oh well, we parked, went in, clicked some pictures, and then came back to the town. Oh and for some reason I saw lot of Asian kinda working in the cafe. Back in the town, we saw the Indian/ Nepali restaurant. Ended up eating Indian food after a week. Coming all the way to Mt Rushmore doesn't feel so bad now ☺️ We ate pretty early dinner and decided to cover some distance before we call it a day. Drove up to Wall on I-90. We crossed Rapid city, and I realized that I wasn't missing city traffic until then. On our way on I-90. It was super windy. Wind gusts was moving my bike from one end of the lane to another. Had to put on the blinkers a couple of times when someone was overtaking us. Speeds up to 80mph and such winds was little scary. I could see a big patch of black cloud ahead. But luckily we survived the windy area and it didn't rain as well. There is something called Wall Drug in Wall. On our way, frikkin so many ads of it on the highway. Some kinda of store / local attraction. Saw a huge dinosaur ad as well. Stayed at a local inn. Met some folks traveling from NY/ NJ. They had an awesome pet parrot with them. Nice walk before the sleep. It's July 10th It's East from here...
