She placed the box of toffee in the center of the coffee table. The guests sat around the table, nervously sipping their tea and coffee. She took one of the candies and unwrapped it, popped it into her mouth.
“Delicious, gran,” she said. “Thank you for bringing the candy.”
“Used to be your favorite,” gran said. Tears sprang from her eyes.
“I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable,” shes said. smoothing the dress on her knees. “But I feel it’s important that, before I get too sick to think on my own, that I make my wishes plain.”
A few tissues came out, poised under eyes.
She waited to finish the candy before speaking further. She wanted it savor it all, everything, every taste, every moment.
