What a Surpise!
Macleans highlights a Quebec study which shows children are often harmed by going to daycare. The sub-headline says this is 'surprising.'
Really? Surprising?
Here's a study from 2007 that says the same thing.
Here's another from 2008, done by UNICEF.
Here's one from 1987 that said the same thing.
The results of any such study would only be surprising to someone who lives in the cocooned world of the modern newsroom, where any information that doesn't fit a certain preconceived vision of the world is quickly forgotten if it's ever mentioned at all.
A personal footnote:
Though I can't find reference to it online, I can remember another study that showed daycare was bad for children that came out in the early 1990's. I remember reading about it in the paper over breakfast. When I watched CNN that night over dinner, they opened by saying 'Good news for parents tonight! Daycare is good for children!'
Now that's creepy.
