#latergram #DayTripToRotto Mixed in #Fremantle’s heritage buildings there are some surprises: an 80s piazza, some Modernist delights, contemporary infill, and the 8-8-8 Trades Hall, reflecting Melbourne’s ‘monument to a number’. #latergram #DayTripToRotto Wandering through the streets of #Fremantle from the Round House to the Town Hall looking for dinner, we’re struck by the beauty of the place - and also its emptiness… (at Fremantle, Western Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc6-5EmrONu/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
#latergram #DayTripToRotto Goodbye #RottnestIsland, so glad we came! (at Thomson Bay) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc6-ZO_rIFw/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
#latergram #DayTripToRotto The main settlement on #RottnestIsland is mainly comprised of historic buildings from when it was a prison island for Aboriginal men (1838-1931); most are now holiday facilities. Only a few buildings remain from the 1840s as in 1856 the superintendent lit a fire to flush two escaped men out of the surrounding bush; it proceeded to burn down nearly the whole settlement. The 1860 chapel was used as a school during the day and a candlelit reading room in the evenings; nearby is the old mill & haystore, now a museum; the Salt Store is now a shop. The Quad (the actual prison, 1864) along with various officials’ houses are now tourist accommodation. (at Thomson Bay) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc6-RLvrMmS/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#latergram #DayTripToRotto Another eye catcher in the centre of #RottnestIsland is the 2004 wind turbine, which sits amongst the numerous salt lakes. In the west are monuments to James Stark (an elegant pillar with a charming quokka wind vane, c.1955) & Roly Smith (a coralstone plinth with an unfortunate bronze boat relief smeared across it, 1974). #latergram #DayTripToRotto There are two lighthouses on #RottnestIsland: the smaller #BathurstLighthouse in the east (1900) & the nearly 40m tall #WadjemupLighthouse in the centre of the island. Completed in 1896 it’s WA’s 4th oldest, and was Australia’s first with a rotating beam which can be seen 50km away. It replaced the 1842-51 tower built by Aboriginal convicts.
