Interactive Material
3.1 Find two works featuring interactive typography that you find engaging aesthetically, conceptually and technically. Document each work with an image sequence (at least twenty frames), link to the original work, and critique the semantics of its use of motion and interaction–what does the behaviour say? Critique should be 250 words minimum.
1. Interactive dictionary VisuWords.
VisuWords is an interactive web-based dictionary and thesaurus which allows its user to literally visualize a word. Search up a word and it appears on your screen surrounded by several nodes, all of which are related to the search word in question. The nodes are different colours and on the side of the screen are presented what each of the colours means (noun, verb, adjective, adverb). If the user hovers over one of the nodes, a box pops up, allowing you a definition of that one node. If the user then chooses to click on a node, other nodes pop up in return, giving them further information on the word they search up and the word in the node itself. The nodes which appear once clicked can be synonyms, attributes, opposites, derivation etc. The user can also drag around individual nodes to move them around and allow them a clearer view of the definition. The behaviours this interactive dictionary possesses allow an interesting twist compared to other dictionaries. Not only is it engaging but it is also much quicker than if someone were to search up a word in a paper dictionary or even an online one. In the case of VisuWords, the user can simply search up a word and is presented its definition along with any related words and their definition as well, their relation to the search word also.
2. Interactive Poem Muse by Naoko Tosa.
The interactive Poem Muse was created was Naoko Tosa and Ryohei Nakatsu in 1996. The installation itself revolves around the building and creating of a poem with the help of both the computer and a participant. Muse, the computer agent which interacts with both the poem and the participant, starts off by uttering a short verse from a randomly chosen poem. In response, the user has the option to chose from certain poetic phrases to continue the poem or to create a unique and personal one. Muse chooses or creates one, and vice versa, both creating poetic verses and generating their very own and unique poem. Not only does the installation uses voice recognition but it also plays with emotion recognition, recognizes a certain pitch in the voice of the participant to formulate its next poetic sentences and also changes the facial expression of Muse. The behaviours exhibited throughout the installation shows the autonomy of the interface itself, however, it still heavily relies upon human interaction. What’s interesting is how Muse is unlike many poem generators which often simply rely on basic human input without much interactivity. Muse goes beyond by not only using voice recognition but also using the participant's emotional response to previous poetic sentences to create their own and further the exchange between the two of them.
3.2 Design a programmatically-controlled interactive behaviour(s) for text. Using the behaviour(s), make/fake an artwork. Consider the semantics of motion and interaction, as well as the elements of narrative and sequence as it relates to the user’s interaction. Document your conception and development process.
Simulate (Fake it): Create a motion video clip or animation that shows the behaviour. Provide a complete package sufficient to clearly communicate your idea. SIMULATE projects will be expected to be more exploratory and complex and must include at least 2 behaviours.
I decided to choose the Simulate part of this assignment because it was easier for me. It ended being not as easy as I thought it would be, at first I looked into interactive text using After Effects however I found that I could not operate the application as well as I used to be able to, therefore I decided to revert to something I was most familiar with and that was of animation.
It was hard to come up with a concept for this assignment regarding interactive material because I found that most of what I would come up with had already been taken, or previously made. Somehow I searching for a few interesting poems which would stimulate my imagination and stumbled upon Pablo Neruda’s Water. As I read and read through the poem it quickly immersed me into another world. His usage of certain words which he recalls often throughout the poem such as “falling” got me thinking about falling water, falling letters and words.
This got me thinking about the flow of the poem and how interesting it would be if a user would be able to regulate that flow. I started sketching a few ideas, a few behaviours the user could interact with in order to create an interactive experience. With their mouse, they would be able to stop that flow, much like putting their hands under a water stream, the water would overflow, in this context, the word would stop and overflow, spilling over and going in a different direction than the one the original poem intended.
By clicking their mouse, they would perhaps be able to stop the stream of words and interact with them, perhaps pushing them around, placing them wherever they would want on the canvas, thus perhaps creating their very own poem at the same time. Another behaviour I looked into but wasn’t sure of is how the user could move their mouse to the very bottom of the canvas and the falling words would glide across the mouse, stopped by the obstacle and place themselves in a completely brand new order, creating a new poem as their initial order is disturbed by the obstacle (mouse).
