[dbhc au flavored] Hermit A Day May '26, Day 9: Favorite “Event” — Don’t Let It Reach The Heart

HI UH. So I was wracking my brain about what to do for today, because there are just so many good hc moments I could draw dbhc-style, but I realized it could be really fun to redraw a previous dbhc moment? As a sort of, ‘what’s my favorite thing that’s happened in dbhc so far?’ And there were SOOO many good thoughts friends and I came up with while combing back through the au Masterpost, but in the end, I’m just. So so crazy about DLIRTH, the fic I wrote that follows the Destruction Comic series. Something about how Destruction puts these guys in such a vulnerable and desperate position… idk man. It just gets me so bad. They make my tummy hurt. You understand.

[dbhc au flavored] Hermit A Day May '26, Day 19: Etho — Past Life Edition!

I played around with this concept for the doodles I did when Past Life was coming out, but the more I’ve thought about it, I think I’ve decided to stick with this concept! Basically, as the series moved through minecraft editions, the Watchers (i suppose) would try to find the vessels/bodies/etc that were used by each player during each of those respective time periods (meaning the players would change physically as the minecraft version changed in each episode as old versions of themselves were physically grafted onto their current minds/souls). Except, for the androids, the earliest vessels available for the Watchers to snag (for versions up to 1.17, when s8 started) would be their original models. So basically, for most of Past Life, the androids are their normal current selves in mind, but living in the brand new bodies they were made with!

(Hilarious still to me that Past life Ep 7 jumps to 1.18, skipping over the version season 8 would have been in. Close enough, Welcome back Destruction Etho)

I was listening to your dbhc Doc playlist and Ghosts and Monsters came on and now I’m scared. What are you planning to do to him

DW! Ghost and Monsters on Doc’s playlist is actually supposed to represent the post-Destruction and early season 9 era for Doc, so it’s not anything y’all don’t already know about, in theory! I imagine Doc struggles a lot with self image after Etho dumps all of those memories into his brain (and then dies/gets shut down while still connected to him), sometimes not being able to differentiate his own thoughts, feelings, and memories from Etho’s. I really like the narrative imagery of Doc being haunted, both metaphorically from Destruction+Dont Let It Reach The Heart and literally physical in his system from Etho, hence the phrasing of Ghosts and Monsters—

(Lyrics like “did I leave that door open, is my mind gone?” Make me think of like. Doc, whose comfort and self identity come from having complete control over himself and knowledge of the things around him, is looking into his code and realizing that he doesn’t recognize these bits of code that have been dumped into him. Very scary and unsettling for him I think. ALSO. The lyrics “Stay awake / ‘cause i’m afraid they’re comin’ for me when I / close my eyes” make me think of DLIRTH when doc tries to go to sleep in chapter 3 when, as he begins to go into sleep mode, Etho’s memories resurface in his subconscious and send him into a near-panic attack. ALSO ALSO, I think what really solidified this song for this part of the playlist for me was the scream after the song’s bridge. It always gives my really intense and vivid imagery of doc like. Reliving etho’s death and gripping his head. Something something waking up from a nightmare and knowing that it was all real)

—Etho is the ghost in his code and the monster under his bed that Doc can’t shake no matter what he does. This sentiment carries really well into the next song, Software Greatman, which explicitly spells out these themes (with the chorus being: “‘I don’t know how to get over this thing / ‘cause it’s always there / And every time I go back into myself / it’s just waiting there”) really well I think :)

so I'm finally getting around to catching up on DBHC, and I got to Destruction (my beloved) and in part 6 in, like, the third image Etho in the bottom corner I just- like- the left half of his face still has that anger in his expression, the one he started out with, but the right half- like- he looks so scared, just, so incredibly desperate- like, he's gone from the anger left over from Last Life and stuff and although we still see some we see him realize and how it just dawns on him that he's in danger, danger of being shut down or reset or something- but he knows he's not safe, and it just looks like some of the original (not/pre malfunctioning) Etho is leaking through, is there for that one moment of utter desperation as he realizes that he's going to be shut down but it's so cool and still so gut-wrenching because we only see that on half his face (our left, his right), because the other half still carries that hate or anger or something- but we also see it waning, because his eye is back to just the iris being red instead of the whole thing (which might just be a "his systems are still going haywire" thing but it hurts more if it isn't and I love angst) also, him trying (succeeding-ish) to interface with Doc at that last possible moment, that last cry for help because he knows he's not safe- the "help" and the fact it isn't "help me" because he knowshe doesn't have much time, he knows he isn't safe and is in danger and he wants to be safe and it's some last-ditch effort in his dying (eh not dying per-se but you get what I mean) moments, it just- AUGH Shep you make me so ill (I love it, don't stop) (ALSO ALSO I FINALLY GOT DBH AFTER YEARS OF WANTING IT (because of you, I blame you) AND I GET TO PLAY IT WOOOOOOO)

It's been so long since Destruction, but this ask had me havin' a blast going back through everything, looking at tags, etc!! I absolutely looove these breakdown asks and it makes me so incredibly happy when y'all take note of and/or point out little details (even as small as enjoying a particular expression)!! <333 Etho's expressions make me insane towards the end of Destruction because you're so right, he's still very broken and wrong and not Right, but that fear that always seems to haunt Etho comes to the surface even here when he's the most unlike himself, rising in the form of desperation and panic. UAGH. Destruction Etho you break my heart </3
