Hey. I just wanna say, I love how you defend Gochi against the bashers and I think you have a good grasp on their ship. Anyway, please don't think I'm shitting on Gochi but I just want to hear your thoughts on Goku leaving his family to train Uub. I swear I like Gochi although I don't ship it much, but I can't get over this scene where Goku just left while his family was clearly upset.
Thank you, but I’m really not here to defend anything, lol. I’m here to enjoy Dragon Ball with other fans, but people in this fandom gotta be a bunch of DICKS and bash and spread confused information about what happens to be my favorite DB/Z canon couple, so I’ll set ‘em straight when I see misinformation crossing my dash or inbox. As far as the Uub ending goes, I have two takes, one as a writer, and one as a fan.
As a writer, I see where Toriyama was going with it. Dragon Ball sagas always ended with kid/teen Goku flying off on his own somewhere, leaving his friends behind as he zoomed off for a new adventure. The one exception (which I loved) was the final DB saga ending where Goku took his new bride with him while following the same pattern. So zoom to its sequel, DBZ, reaching its conclusion, and how do you wrap up something that epic? Follow the pattern. It ended with Goku zooming off to a new adventure, leaving all his friends (and family) behind saying, “Gokuuu!” as always. It was tidy enough. Now, as a fan, I honestly hated it. This was the one and only moment pre-Super I hated, but it’s always been really easy to disregard the little things that bother me about it for several reasons.
-First of all, Goku wasn’t far from home and he had instant transmission. He left, but he really didn’t leave. He could’ve, on a whim, in the middle of the night, transported himself home in a second and returned to Uub’s village without missing anything. I’m sure he did.
-Second, he could sense everyone else’s ki and they could sense his, so if they were really upset about him leaving, Gohan, Goten, Krillin, or whoever could’ve gone to ask him to come home at any time. My headcanon is that if he did stay away for any length of time, it’s because everyone was letting him be his free-spirited self, even Chi-Chi, who grew to accept Goku’s flaws just as he accepted hers over the course of their marriage. The ending episode made it pretty clear that Goku had been growing bored at home during the years of peace prior to this ending (coughcough) and despite her weariness over his sudden departure, Chi-Chi would understand that this was a thing he needed to do.
-Third, Goku explicitly told them “I’ll visit soon”. Not in a long time, not maybe, not goodbye forever, not I’m gonna forget about you guys and fight fight fight. He was coming back, even though GT dropped the ball with the idea of him being gone 5/10 years, but that’s GT, and even the people who want to fight with me that Super is canon would agree that GT is not. He came back.
-Fourth, I am a writer, and because I see where this was meant to all come together, I realize the implications about Goku’s relationships weren’t thought out. They weren’t the focus of concern here, and if they had been, we would’ve seen an ending more like the one we saw at the end of Dragon Ball. Sometimes a writer just wants to end a story, especially one that went on for as long as DB/Z did. I understand, and therefore, I just continue to dislike that ending, but not hate it as much as I could hate other things.
