Okay, so far Absolute Wonder Woman has given us Circe, Cheetah, Giganta, Veronica Cale, Doctor Poison, even obscure rogues like Queen Clea and Ara the Fish-Men Queen.

You know who's suspiciously absent from the rogues gallery so far?

Ares.

(And Dr. Psycho, but I wanna focus on Ares for now.)

I have no doubt he'll appear eventually, since the Greek pantheon plays a big role in the story. Diana's blessings come from the goddesses Athena, Artemis, Aphrodite and Hecate. Zeus has been built up as the overarching Big Bad for a while now and his lackeys Apollo and Hades have tried and failed to prevent Diana from becoming a hero and a symbol of hope.

What I'm wondering is, when Ares does show up, will he be an enemy or an ally? Usually Ares is one of Wonder Woman's greatest foes, but so is Circe and the Absolute Universe version of her instead became Diana's loving mother.

I'd also like to add that in Greek mythology, Ares is the literal father and patron deity of the Amazons. I don't know if AWW is gonna shake up the Wonder Woman mythos to that degree, but we've already seen them make some big changes. Again, Circe is now Diana's mom instead of her arch-enemy, Barbara Ann Minerva, who is Cheetah in the regular DC universe, is a close ally, friend (maybe love interest?)*.

*Though it seems like with the most recent issues they're aiming towards making Barbara a villain again which honestly sucks because I find the ally-version of her much more interesting.

The Absolute Universe so far hasn't been afraid to throw some wild curveballs at the readers (some far better executed than others). Maybe I'm hoping for too much. Maybe Ares is just gonna be his bog standard evil self and the antithesis to Diana's message of peaceful conflict resolution and love.

But seeing as his lover (Aphrodite) was one of Diana's mentors... who knows?

Like even going with the tip of the iceberg ones featured in adaptions there's: Cheetah, Giganta, Ares, Dr Poison, Circe.

You could add the ones who gained internet infamy like: Egg Fu, Angle Man, Minister Blizzard, Paper Man, Blue Snowman

Anyone else think there's untapped potential in Ares actually being Diana's grandfather and the Patron-God of the Amazons in DC or is that just me?

The whole deal about Wonder Woman's creation was creating a superhero who's greatest strengths and weaknesses were methods considered more peaceful like love, compassion and submission and not brute strength, firepower and violence.

Which means that, as the God of War, Wrath and Violence, Ares is and always will be Diana's perfect antagonist because he opposes Diana down to a conceptual level.

Which is why I think making him the patron-god of the Amazons and Hippolyta's father (like in some of the real-life myths) and, by extension, Diana's technical grandfather is so interesting because you can go anywhere with it:

The god, the living force of nature, who opposes your ideals at every turn is not only part of your family, your people and your homeland, he helped create them.

What happened in the past that changed things so drastically?

Are parts of your history and the history of your people actually true to what they're said to be (like your lasso and your bracelets) or is there more to them that you might not like?

What if the people of your homeland decide, after years of learning and teaching how to oppose it, decide to go to his side or maybe even BACK to his side?

And that's not even considering the position Diana and Hippolyta occupy in the relationship tree that is Ares, Athena, Hera and Zeus.

And so on and so forth.

I just think there some things worth exploring here.

Of course, I also may be wrong in all of this. What do you guys think?

Hey there! Been a while 😅

Let's just say I've been going through many different fandoms as of now. And unfortunately I'm not able to tell you all a lot about it. Sometimes because of school, mainly because I want to draw art of it first before posting about it. But I suppose since that's too slow, I'll simply drop down lore even without art. It's a quicker way to introduce the lore I've made.
