"East of the River Goldmine" Anacostia/Congress Heights
In a section of the Southeastern quadrant of Washington, DC one can find a looming example of the "Last Hood". An area that was neglected for many years is now on the verge of transformation. The explosive redevelopment that has been taking place in the Northeast quadrant for some time has now transcended its geographic border, the Anacostia River, and is spreading like wildfire into this historical gold mine of an area.
This section of Washington, DC is very affordable, especially when compared with the rest of the District.
Time is of the essence, however, as property values and rents can skyrocket seemingly overnight in this metropolitan area.
The future plans for redevelopment in Anacostia will ensure that it is no exception to the rule. From one month to the next, those old dilapidated buildings that have long been associated with Anacostia are routinely being replaced with new bars, juiceries, coffee shops and trendy restaurants.
The list of projects coming to Southeast is both extensive and impressive. Bizjournals.com is reporting that one of DC's most popular chains, Bus Boys & Poets, is among the latest companies to jump at the opportunity to expand into the Anacostia area.
In September 2015 Mayor Browser announced the Washington Wizards plan for building a brand new $55 million sports and entertainment arena in Anacostia as well.
The most exciting and innovative redevelopment project, however, may very well be the makeover of the 11th Street Bridge. With a groundbreaking concept and design, the bridge will feature elevated parks, outdoor performance spaces, educational facilities, paths for walking and/or biking and will connect Anacostia to Capitol Hill. Check out www.bridgepark.org for more information on this exciting project.
While redevelopment can be thrilling, there’s one other thing that I personally love about this section of the city and it is that the neighborhood sits atop the highest elevation in the district. When driving down the streets one cannot help but be struck by the bird’s-eye views that stretch from DC to Maryland to Virginia and back again. It truly is something that you must see for yourself.
The culture of Anacostia is being sewn daily as we all watch and wait for this area to redefine itself in an entirely new way.
