Because of how busy I got with Halloween costumes, I haven't been doing any practice work so Sunday I tried to remedy that. Here's the #wip of a vestment gown with some fabric from @moodfabrics that I've had lying around for months. I'm pretty sure this is my first attempt at anything even remotely resembling bridal wear. Next to Lois and Clark, Aquaman and Mera are my favorite comic book power couple. Was asked to do a DC Designer Series Aquaman and Mera statue based off Aquaman #33. I found that recreating my original 2D cover with a 3D mindset for sculptor Dave Cortez to follow was a fun challenge. Specifically in how to merge the figures in a natural way. I noticed that small variations in my drawing would change the energy and emotion of the figures greatly. For example, the overlapping hand placements and lowered tilt of Mera's head in relationship to Aquaman's were key to convey the original energy of the cover. This was a super fun project to be a part of and I can't help but dream about what other covers would make cool sculptures like this one (Out this month!) It must be a nearly impossible task with so many great covers to choose from for DC to pick one at a time. Still got some finishing touches to make with the collar, sleeves, and hem but I'm extremely satisfied with how this turned out. Though next time I think I'll make the collar a bit bigger.
